This National Veterinary Technician Week, we're celebrating the incredible Associates who make our hospitals thrive — like Karen, who began as a CSR and never stopped growing and like Joanne, who sought mentorship and support to obtain her VTNE.

At VCA, we're proud to champion our veterinary technicians every step of the way — offering mentorship, encouragement, and the resources to help you reach your full potential.

To every vet tech in our VCA family: thank you. What you do matters deeply — to our teams, to our patients, and to the pet owners who trust us with their most beloved companions.

Every surgery starts long before the first incision. It starts with a veterinary technician who has spent years mastering their skills, anticipating needs, monitoring vitals, and showing up fully prepared for every patient who comes through the door.

Vet techs are the heart of every OR team, and their skill and dedication make a difference every single day. At some VCA specialty hospitals, we take surgical collaboration even further. Some of our teams include Certified Surgical Technologists (CSTs) — professionals who earned specialized degrees specifically to support surgeons in the OR.

The result? Less time under anesthesia. Better outcomes. And a team that truly works as one. 💙

Because every patient is somebody's pet — and they deserve nothing less than the best.

Here's A Tip for Tuesday to make a vet trip less stressful for your cat! Get them used to their carrier by leaving it out with treats and bedding, use pheromone sprays like Feliway to calm them, cover the carrier with a blanket in the car to reduce visual stress, drive smoothly, and stay calm yourself, using positive reinforcement like treats for calm behavior.
1. Familiarize with the Carrier
• Leave it out: Keep the carrier in your home as a safe space, not just for vet visits.
• Make it inviting: Add familiar bedding, toys, and treats to create positive associations.
2. Use Calming Aids & Pheromones
• Feliway: Spray synthetic pheromone (like Feliway) on the carrier blanket 15-30 minutes before leaving to mimic calming scents.
3. Create a Calm Car Environment
• Cover the carrier: Drape a light blanket over the carrier to block scary sights.
• Drive smoothly: Avoid sudden stops or loud music; secure the carrier so it doesn't shift.
• Wait in the car: Skip the busy waiting room by waiting in your car until called.
4. Stay Calm & Positive
• Your mood matters: Cats sense your stress, so stay calm and speak in soothing tones.
• Positive reinforcement: Reward calm behavior with treats or praise, both before and after the trip.
5. Practice Handling & Ask About Meds
• Practice exams: Gently touch your cat's paws, ears, and mouth at home.
• Ask your vet: Discuss anti-anxiety medication (like gabapentin) if your cat's anxiety is severe.

Walk Your Dog Month is celebrated every January, serving as a motivation for owners to get outside with their dogs for regular exercise, bonding, and to combat pet obesity, offering benefits like improved health for both pets and humans, better socialization, and reduced destructive behaviors, with tips to make it fun and safe in winter. Remember: Always consult your vet before starting a new exercise routine for your pet.
Why Walk Your Pet in January?
• Combats Winter Slump: It's cold, but pets still need exercise, and this month provides encouragement to stay active.
• Health Focus:
With high rates of pet obesity, walks are crucial for physical and mental well-being, preventing illnesses, and improving joint health
• Bonding & Training: Walks are quality time for strengthening your relationship and practicing commands like heeling.
• Behavioral Benefits: Releases pent-up energy, reducing boredom, barking, and chewing.

National Bird Day lands on January 5th, and it is truly a day to celebrate our feathered friends and the hope they provide for our ecosystems!
Launched in 2002 by the Avian Welfare Coalition and Born Free USA, this day is meant to ruffle some feathers by raising awareness about bird conservation and the plight of captive birds. The date was chosen to coincide with the end of the annual Christmas Bird Count, a massive citizen science effort where people track the health of native bird populations.
Here are a few ways to celebrate without winging it:
• Feather your nest: Set up bird feeders or baths to make your backyard a fly place to hang out.
• Be a wise owl: Educate yourself and others about the illegal bird trade and the importance of protecting wild habitats.
• Take a gander: Grab some binoculars and go birdwatching—it’s a great way to tweet yourself to some nature!
Whether you’re a lifelong birder or just starting out, January 5th is the perfect time to show these egg-straordinary creatures some love. ♥️ 🐦

Day 12 of our 12 Days of Pet Health: Start the New Year Right
A fresh year is the perfect time to set your pet up for a healthy start. Preventive care helps catch issues early, supports long term wellness, and keeps your pet feeling their best. Here are a few ways to begin the new year on the right paw:
🩺 Schedule a wellness exam: Regular checkups help monitor your pet’s overall health and catch small concerns before they become bigger ones. 🦷 Plan a dental checkup: Dental health affects more than just fresh breath. A dental exam can help prevent discomfort and support whole body wellness. 🔬 Consider preventive screenings: Bloodwork, parasite testing, and age appropriate screenings give a clear picture of your pet’s health and help guide personalized care.
Starting the new year with proactive care is a simple way to keep your pet happy, healthy, and by your side for years to come.

Day 11 of our 12 Days of Pet Health: Year End Medication Check
As the year winds down, it is a great time to make sure your pet is up to date on the medications that keep them healthy and protected. A quick review now can help avoid any gaps in care during the busy holiday season. Here are a few things to check:
💊 Keep medications on hand: This time of year gets busy, so it is helpful to check that you have the next doses of your pet’s medications ready. 🦟 Keep flea and tick protection going: Parasites are still active in many areas through winter, so staying consistent is important. ❤️ Continue heartworm prevention: Heartworm preventives should be given year round. Now is a good time to confirm you have doses ready heading into the new year.
