Meet 4-month-old Rainier! He paid us a visit after helping himself to the other dogs' food, resulting in a very swollen belly. After a quick injection, Rainier left feeling much better and 3.6 pounds lighter! 🐾 We wish everyone a safe and relaxing Labor Day weekend. Remember, we're open 24 hours through Monday if your pets need urgent care. Stay safe, enjoy the holiday, and try not to eat as much as Rainier did!

Antifreeze (ethylene glycol) is highly toxic to dogs, and even small amounts can be deadly. Its sweet taste attracts pets, risking ingestion and severe health issues.

Symptoms—drunkenness, unsteady gait, excessive thirst, vomiting, seizures—can occur within hours. If you suspect poisoning, contact your vet or us immediately; do not induce vomiting or give activated charcoal.

Quick treatment with antidotes and IV fluids is crucial. Store antifreeze securely, clean spills promptly, and consider using safer alternatives like propylene glycol-based antifreeze. Your pet’s safety depends on vigilance! 🐶🚨

Upper Respiratory Infection in Cats

Upper respiratory infections, also known as URIs, are something we see here at AECMM quite frequently. These are most commonly seen in cats, but can also be seen in dogs. They are similar to the common cold in humans. Most cats present with sneezing and discharge from their nose and eyes.

Upper respiratory infections are highly contagious between animals and usually present wherever they live in groups. Getting infected is easy and can stem from any socialization or sharing of food bowls or common areas/toys with an animal showing signs.

Most URIs run a course of 7 – 10 days regardless of treatment. Treatment typically consists of some sort of nasal or ocular eye medication, fluid therapy and sometimes an oral medication such as an anti-inflammatory or antibiotic in severe cases.

Here are some signs and symptoms to watch for if you think your feline friend might have an upper respiratory infection.
• Sneezing
• Nasal discharge
• Runny eyes
• Cough
• Sniffles
• Fever
• Oral or nasal ulcers
• Lethargy/not eating in more severe cases

Brachycephalic breeds like Bulldogs, Pugs, and Shih Tzus are especially prone to heat stress during summer 🌡️.

Their short muzzles make cooling through panting difficult, risking overheating. Keep them cool, well-hydrated, and avoid intense play on hot days. Walk early morning or evening, take shorter walks, and use a harness instead of a collar to reduce airway pressure. Providing a cooling pad or indoor activities helps maintain comfort. Regular vet visits ensure their breathing stays healthy. 🐶💧
