🏹 MOCK SCRAPES 101: EVERY TOOL IS PART OF THE EQUATION
Every hunting setup is a mathematical equation. Location, timing, wind, access, stand placement, and scent all factor into the outcome. Every tool we use can increase our odds—when we use it correctly.
A mock scrape is one of the easiest and most economical tools you can add to that equation. Here’s how to give it a purpose.
Start with location. Find where deer already travel—funnels, pinch points, trail intersections, and staging areas near food. Build your mock scrape along an established route to give a passing deer a reason to investigate.
Give them a contact point. An overhanging branch, hanging vine, or rub rope provides a surface deer can sniff, lick, chew, and work with their forehead. Use nearby active licking branches as a guide, and make sure deer can comfortably reach it with room to stand underneath.
This is where we use Border Patrol Preorbital Blend—a blend incorporating forehead gland, preorbital scent from the area near the eye’s tear duct, and lip and mouth saliva. Apply it to the branch, vine, or rope where that overhead interaction takes place.
Prepare the ground. Clear a patch roughly 2 to 3 feet across directly beneath the contact point, removing leaves and vegetation to expose bare soil. You’re starting the site; deer may enlarge and maintain it once they adopt it.
On the ground, we start with Fresh Scrape, our blend of 100% natural deer urine—what we call “a community scrape in a bottle.” It complements the overhead contact point to create a complete scrape setup.
Match your scent to the season. Our approach changes as fall progresses:
🍂 Fresh Scrape is our foundation for establishing and maintaining mock scrapes.
🦌 Buck Rut Juice comes into our setups as frost rolls in toward the end of October, and we continue using it through the remainder of the season. Local deer activity guides the transition—the frost is a seasonal cue, rather than a requirement.
🔥 Triple Estrus comes into play as the rut kicks off and breeding activity builds. 100% natural. 100% fresh.
Follow product directions and local scent-use regulations when applying any deer scent.
Build around your shot. Place the scrape within your comfortable shooting range, then check the lane from stand height. Consider where the deer’s body will be while it works the branch. A clear view of its head doesn’t necessarily mean a clear shot at its vitals.
Let timing guide the hunt. Ground scraping generally increases before peak breeding, but much scrape activity happens at night. Use camera observations to learn when deer visit and how they approach. A busy scrape becomes more useful for hunting when it lines up with daylight movement.
Protect the setup. Account for wind and thermals, plan a quiet entry that avoids the expected approach, and limit unnecessary visits. Make each trip into the area count.
Put those pieces together, and a well-placed mock scrape can help turn your setup into a kill spot. Its value comes from how well it fits the deer’s movement—and how carefully you hunt it.
Every detail matters. Every tool has a purpose. Used correctly, they work together to put the odds in your favor.
