We just had puppies! They were born May 29th! Solid livers and solid blacks available if anybody's interested get a hold of me these are out of Riot my good black female who is sweet as a bug and easy to live with and hunts like a machine, and out of the male named Comanche he was a guide dog down at Holly Hills I did some training with Comanche years ago and I really like the dog a lot nice dog hunts nice. So if you're interested want to see pedigrees get a hold of me. Point picture is of the dam.

I had a customer call me yesterday he has a 7 month old short hair male and he called a trainer back when the pup was 5 months old and the trainer told him he was behind the eight ball and he needed to be shooting around this pup because he was already late getting him used to gunfire. So the guy takes the dog to the field throws a bumper shoots the gun and the dog is now gun shy. So he was calling me for advice and I told him I don't introduce gunfire to my pups until they're chasing a fly. So I don't usually bring a dog in for training until they're about 7 or 8 months old and even with males it might be even later because males mature slower than females. So in my opinion shooting over 5 month old is out of the question. Now here's the thing about trainers I tell my customers that if I leave my house and drive to dayton, there must be 2,000 different routes I can take, some are shorter and some are longer. And the route that I take may not work for you. So when you call a trainer for advice understand it is not written law it is just advice. If it doesn't work for you thank them kindly for their time and move on because just like the drive to Dayton there's a lot of different opinions out there and if you feel it does not work for you call another trainer, call two or three and then pick the route that you think works best for you and your dog. Because as I'm talking to this guy I can tell that he could feel in his heart that this wasn't the right thing to do, but because he's the trainer and he said he tried it. If I was going to take my dog to a trainer I want to hear about their whole program not just one part of it. Because taking one part out of a program is just a little snapshot but if you don't do the work that needs to be done before that spot and then you don't do the work behind that spot you're going to be in a mess you're going to have holes in your program that you can't fill because you don't know the information. And as we all know fixing a gun shy dog is expensive and very time consuming. So I told him lay off the gunfire get him back in the field get some birds get him introduced to birds and get him loving what he does. A happy dog is a is a confident dog. And then go from there.

I got a phone call yesterday gentleman called base got a 7-month-old male short hair he had had females previously called some other trainer when a puppy was 5 months old in the prayer told him you're behind you need to be shooting around that dog everyday so they take him out to the field throw bumpers and shoot the gun and now the dogs gun shy. As I'm talking to this gentleman I can tell that he really didn't believe that he was you know late teaching this dog anything. The thing about training is there's a lot of different trainers and a lot of different ways to train dogs and if you're talking to a trainer and in your heart and your soul you know this is not the information that you're looking for thank them for their time politely and move on call another trainer call two or three. Always tell my customers if I leave my house and drive to Dayton there's probably 2,000 different routes I could take. Maybe one shorter maybe once longer maybe one has less traffic or maybe one congested but they all get me to Dayton. What you've got to do is figure out what route is best for you because the route that's best for me may not work for you and it's the same with dog training. So when you call a dog trainer and ask them for advice he's only getting a snapshot of what's going on with between you and your dog to begin with and when that happens I usually try to give him a couple different scenarios and how to fix it I don't just think well I know what's going on here and you're behind the eight ball and you did everything wrong you can't be that way about it you got to help people. So the next time you call somebody for help make sure that they're helping you and in your heart if you think that's not going to work for you move on. Because in this instance when I train dogs I don't ever do introduce gunfire until they're chasing a bird and this dog has never been on a bird so this guy set him up to fail from the get-go. So I gave him some suggestions told him to get some birds and hopefully he can get this dog turned around without too much trouble. Trainers are people too so when you ask for someone's advice it doesn't necessarily mean you have to take it.
