Giving Fobs to Non-Members Voilates Our Rules

We’ve been notified that certain dog park members are renting their homes and giving their dog park key fobs to renters. Please do not do that. The dog park is a community based on trust, and giving access to non-members and their dogs destroys that trust. Plus, it is not very wise from a legal standpoint—the member agreement expressly includes an indemnity BY YOU for any damages or injury caused by you or any dog or person you allow to enter the park. The Membership Agreement also says that this practice is grounds for revocation of membership.

If anyone can supply the names of anyone doing this, please report them to contact@lewesunleashed. Your confidentiality will be maintained.

Thank you.

SPRING CLEAN UP…..

Sunday, April 24 from 9 to 11

It is that time of year again and we are looking for volunteers to help us clean up the park. We plan on starting Sunday morning at 9 AM and working for the next 2 hours. We want to remove stones, pine cones, and branches, fill in holes, bust up stumps, and clean the filters and the drains. We request that you leave your dogs at home for this event since it will be difficult to watch them while we are cleaning up. We will have some plastic buckets for you but please bring your rakes and/ or shovels.
The weather is supposed to be good that day with a temperature in the low 60s and a small chance of rain.
We hope to see you there.

Best Dog Park
What better judge of the best dog park can you have than a dog? My name is Barney Fife. I have been to a number of dog parks in my short life. There have been one or two that my owner would not let me enter. Others have been nice, but the Lewes Unleashed Dog Park is the best!

Actually, Lewes is the absolute best place for a dog to reside. Anyone visiting the Lewes area knows that it has gone to us. Any time, day or night, with our owners in tow we can be seen walking the trails, streets, and neighborhoods. But we dogs need a chance to run free, to socialize with other members of our species, and to exercise at a pace that many of our owners can’t manage.

Thus, the Lewes Unleashed Dog Park opened on August 17, 2016, thanks to the efforts of a non-profit group known as the Lewes Unleashed Association (LUA). The property is sub-leased by the City of Lewes to the Dogs Unleashed Association. The park is comprised of over 4.5 acres, so there is plenty of room to roam.

The entire park with the exception of the entrance is surrounded by a tree barrier anywhere from 100 to 500 feet. That way we can bark at each other without our owners saying, ‘Quiet’. It was designed in such a way that many native plants and trees were retained to provide shade and keep the parklike setting. These are facts that my owner tells me, but all I know is that it is one fun place to be.

The park is comprised of three rather large completely fenced areas. There is a training/exhibition area. Although I like to show off my tricks, the word training sounds like work. There is an area for puppies and older dogs. I started going there when I was a puppy. It is big, but I was always looking over the fence at all the dogs in the really big area that is for the general dog population. It is my favorite area, because I love to chase balls. On a nice day you will find as many as 30 or 40 dogs, and one of the most popular activities for our owners is throwing balls. I love racing the other dogs to get a ball, any ball. If I catch it, they don’t seem to mind. They know that I share (most of the time). The area is so big, and the owners use those chuckits to toss the ball that goes very far. I can run and run with the other dogs. It is absolute heaven.

Access is secured and available to members only. There is a double entrance for those of us who are escape artists. I am one of them, but I don’t escape when I know I am going in the park. Membership is not limited to Lewes residents, but a yearly fee is charged to maintain the area and to buy the balls and chuckits. Wow. More info my owner shares. Besides trees for shade, water is available in the areas, both for drinking and for play, thanks to a baby pool. So after I have caught 6 or 7 balls and brought them to a bench by my owner, I can cool off in the shade and grab a couple laps of water before I start my chase again.

I am pretty vocal about what I like and don’t like. Take it from a dog. The Lewes Unleashed Dog Park is the best!

Silt Fence Being Removed Friday Morning
Friday morning they will be removing the silt fence and filling in the trenched area. Please stay out of that area while the work is in progress. We will be opening the general dog area but be aware that the sod is still fragile and we may need to turn on the sprinklers over the next few weeks. It will be best for the sod if you continue to play in the back of the general dog area as much as possible.
Thanks for your cooperation

Sod and Curtesy!
The rain this weekend helped and our volunteer waterers are doing a great job keeping the sod wet. The general dog area is looking good. We expect to keep the silt fence in place for at least another week so please try and keep your dogs out. Lots of people are coming in to use the gates in the small dog area to get into the back of the general dog area. Please try not to bother the small dogs. Remember that space is reserved for small and older dogs.
Thanks for your consideration and support!

*PLEASE HELP WITH THIS SO OUR FUR BABIES HAVE A NICE GRASSY PLACE TO PLAY*

Installing Sod in the General Dog Area!
We plan to begin installing Bermuda grass sod in the entrance of the general dog area on Wednesday, May 12.
The first step will be to bring in a Harley rake to break up the soil. After that, we will put down topsoil and then finally install sod. We will then put in a silt fence blocking off that area. We anticipate 2 or 3 days to complete the installation of the sod.
The general dog area will be closed when the workers are present especially when the tractor and Harley rake are being used. If you go in after working hours, please try and keep your dogs out of that area during the process.
Once the silt fence is up, please try and keep your dogs from going into the sod area.
We will need to water in the sod for the next three weeks to get it established. During those three weeks, entry to the general dog area will be through the double gates. Please keep your dogs off of the fresh sod.
This is a big project and a major expense that we hope will eliminate most of the mud at the park. We believe that a couple of weeks of inconvenience will have a big payoff. Please help make this successful!
I will be sending out this reminder several times over the next week

Saturday, April 17 from 1 PM to 3 PM
Please come and help us clean up the park on this date. We have some buckets but if you can bring your own bucket and rake that would help. Please leave your dogs at home.
We will be picking up rocks, branches, pine cones, and any trash. We also need a few volunteers to help with the installation of the sun shades.
For the first 3 years of the dog park, we held a spring clean-up day where volunteers would help us clean up. Last year because of the concerns about the virus we chose not to hold our annual cleanup. We hope you can join us this year. Many hands make light work
