Breeding season 2026 just started on Saturday, for us in South Dakota. So excited for this entirely new crop of babies! Not gonna lie tho, turning the studs and mares out together for the first time is TOUGH on my nerves 🫣🤪

The first thing we teach in our basic horsemanship program is horse care! This is Alison's first time cleaning out a horses hoof, which is REQUIRED in our programs basis grooming lesson. As you can see in the 2nd picture there were stones removed from that hoof, we have gravel in our drive and walk ways to eliminate mud, but it can cause issues for the horses if the time isn't taken to clean their feet. This happened just in the walk from her pen to the barn.

If you fail to clean a horses feet before riding or working them, even from the ground, you are taking a risk of creating a bruise, causing thrush or infection, or even general discomfort...its like walking around with a rock in your boot, try it sometime, its not pleasant. This should be done EVERY TIME by EVERY horse handler.

Having a love for horses is not something you outgrow. You may have to take a break from it from time to time, but it always finds its way back to you! Jumping back in can be a little intimidating, this I know first hand too, but taking the first step is all you need to do, we'll help with the rest! Her smile proves it! I'm so proud of her!!

Thank you Lord for this amazingly beautiful, strong group of ladies! We had a great class last night! All of these ladies are at different levels in their training and riding abilities, so we started the night with this course. It helps every rider bond with their horse, learn/improve communication with their horse, build confidence in handling (steering and stopping) their horse, set boundaries when needed and hit goals! It's hard to belive getting over a raised bar, without knocking it off could be so hard, yet each one struggled and each one concurred it!! One of these ladies started this week, one will get her first rides in the round pen, one will ride in the large arena for the first time and one got to work a mare thru her own first time big arena jitters and help determine safe matches for these firsts! Everyones levels and goals are different, yet everyone worked together, cheered each other on and hit new Milestones tonight, I'm SO VERY PROUD of each of them!
