This is probably going to make some people mad but it needs to be said!
STOP BREEDING RABBITS!!!
There, now that I said it let me get into it. Just because it can breed, doesn’t mean it should. Just because you have a male and a female doesn’t mean you should throw them together to get cute baby bunnies. Stop breeding anything and everything together, unless it’s a project you are working on and you are prepared to make hard culls. “But I give the babies away, I just like watching them grow.” No! Stop that! Those babies you give away will most likely end up being turned loose in someone’s yard or neighborhood to fend for itself, which it can’t do. “But wild rabbits survive just fine.” Yep, because they are just that, WILD! They are meant to be wild and are born knowing to seek shelter and find food. Domestic rabbits are born with the survival skills of a napkin. If you aren’t breeding for an actual purpose, examples; show, breed project, meat, etc then they don’t need to be bred, period. Keep your rabbits separate or just don’t have them at all. This is why actual breeders are having such a hard time dealing with people. We get messages asking about a rabbit but when told the price they get mad and say they can get a rabbit for $10 from someone else. Ok, cool, go buy Martha’s mixbreed mutts that she picked up at a yard sale and thought it was a good idea to breed because she could make a few dollars. Actual breeders put a lot of thought and consideration into what rabbits get paired and what rabbits are even fit to breed. Bad confirmation, nope, possibly health issues, hard nope! We don’t breed a rabbit just because it’s pretty or just because it can. We don’t feed the cheapest feed, we spend hours researching every feed out there and compare them to get the best, we spend hours with our rabbits daily caring for them, socializing young ones and deciding who makes the cut to stay a breeder and who doesn’t. Rabbits are a lot of work, not just something you can get, throw in a cage and forget about. So keep this in mind when you message a breeder to ask about a rabbit. Meat rabbits don’t really count as long as they are actual meat rabbits and not just the ones people have thrown together and now have babies but they are just mixed breeds and in**ed so they call them “meat” rabbits to justify breeding them. That’s my rant. Thanks for reading.
