Had an amazing time at the Missouri Taxidermy Association convention this past weekend. The showroom was packed with around 180 pieces all together, and a handful of pieces having world, national, and other state level awards, which made for a very high quality and competitive show! Huge thanks to everyone who made it possible, especially the board members and judges.
I was very blessed to be trusted with a pair of King Eiders to put together for a show piece. I was pretty shocked to have even had the opportunity to work on such amazing birds, much less be given 100% creative freedom with the piece. This was my second year competing in the Masters Division so I had a few things from last year to work on. I spent a lot of time trying to make sure these two birds were as close as possible to the real thing. The hens head I used to mold and cast for an open mouth. The drake needed a few head alterations with a commercial head. Overall they were some of the most challenging birds compared to anything l’ve worked on up to this point. The sea star I actually made from scratch...
All in all turned out to be a really nice piece. I had a base custom made by Nichols Taxidermy Bases to accent the colors of the birds which turned out awesome.
Both birds received Masters blue ribbons which is the first time I have placed that high competing at that level. The drake scored a little higher which won Masters Best of Category Award. He was essentially the highest scoring bird in the state competition not including turkeys. I was very honored to take home this award. I have been really pushing myself the last few years to become competitive in the Masters Division. There are so many people to thank for helping me get to where I am today. My amazing clients, who trust me with their birds, especially those who give me free rein and allow me to travel with them. My amazing wife, who helps give me the opportunity to spend time away at shows and work late nights in the shop. And thank you to everyone I’ve met through the Missouri Taxidermy Association. The friendships extend far beyond the shows, and the knowledge and skills that are shared are truly priceless!
