Dr. Kara's FIREWORKS SAFETY TIPS

Please keep our furbabies safe this weekend by reviewing these safety tips and make sure you have already filled your pet's anxiety medication and verified the effective dosage.

TIPS:
Day Events- It will likely be too HOT for your pet and fresh water will need to always be available, even inside.
Avoid walking your pet on asphalt or concrete as it can “fry an egg,” it can also burn your babies paw pads.
Indoors- During this holiday it would be safer for pets to be inside air-conditioned quiet areas to avoid becoming frightened, lost, or getting heat stroke.
A quiet secure room would be best for pets with noise and light phobias, and should be used prior to the event, to keep the pet calm during the lead up time and during the event.
Have anti-anxiety medications ready and on board prior to the event as they often take time to work. DON’T FORGET TO PICK UP YOUR PETS MEDICATIONS PRIOR TO THE WEEKEND.
Use a Thunder-Shirt as a non-medical option to relieve anxiety . For some pets this is a staple and for others it can be used as a safe adjunct therapy.
Make sure pets are wearing their collars and ID, have been Micro-chipped, and have a recent picture just in case – Many pets run away frightened by the noise during fireworks or storms, and pets can become injured or end up in the shelter.
Use ambient noise to counter the frightening noises, such as TV and Radio.
DO NOT TAKE PETS WITH ANXIETY TO FIREWORKS EVENTS.

The sun is out! Weather is beautiful. Warm breeze. Hot food on the grill. Don't forget, pets get HOT TOO! With the start of Summer in Tennessee we are warning our friends about the dangers it can present to our fluffy children. They can not tolerate heat the way we do, they sweat differently, most are wearing fur coats, and they can not tell you when they are too hot. Breeds with short noses, elderly pets, pets with endocrine diseases, and young pets are especially at risk for complications due to heat. This summer please think about the heat from a different perspective, one with four feet. We are glad to post some tips from the Texas ASPCA that we find particularly helpful. With the coming holiday weekend we want to remind our clients that Summer's official kicking off and with it comes some important concerns for our fur babies. In addition to the heat and potential for heat stroke, storms and phobias, fireworks and noise fears, there is an increased risk for gastrointestinal diseases due to stress and inappropriate dietary goodies. Please keep your pets safe this summer by keeping then cool, hydrated, on their regular diets, and refill any anxiety medications needed for storms and fireworks before they are needed. HAVE A FUN AND HEALTHY HOLIDAY!
