Service dogs are legally medical equipment. It is a crime to distract one, harm one, misrepresent a pet as one.
Service dogs are also dogs and they have needs to be met outside of work. They need grooming, play, walks, maybe even some friends.
Contrary to popular belief service dogs don’t “work” 24/7 and are not forced to work. If they are I question the morals of that team or program.

“E collars are abuse” right because this dog is so scared and in pain

If you can teach a reliable recall without it, awesome! I’m tired of the force free vs balanced arguments people come up with. It’s either good training or bad training. Is the dog happy and safe? It’s probably good training. And a lot of dogs are happy and safe with prongs and E collars.

To be against tools no matter the situation is weird to me. What happens when you have a 60 year old woman walking a Newfoundland? A prong might be a good idea for her safety.
Some trainers don’t like to admit that average people don’t like to wait for noticeable progress. Or can’t or won’t. And some people need quicker results. I’d rather they get it with safe tool useage through a knowledgeable trainer than figuring it out themselves and traumatizing their dog in the process. Not everything is about you, sometimes you need to help out the person in front of you. Sometimes safe tool useage is the only thing standing between that dog going to the shelter, being rehomed, being dumped or being euthanized.

Imagine working for free for 2-3 years and then being paid. Thats why service dogs are so expensive. You’re not getting a dog. You’re getting WORK

Yesterday I had a fun time working with Twitty!

Twitty has a great food and work drive and will be working on leash skills, recall and dog reactivity. He’s a bit overstimulated by his environment, but I doubt it’ll take him long to get the game. Hopefully I convinced them to try for his CGCs 👀

Placement Guy joined me on a personal trip this weekend

It was his first time working next to another service dog and I thought he’d try to play, but he was very professional. He went to multiple restaurants and explored downtown and even worked with another handler. He’s slow to mature and slowly becoming a well rounded working dog.

You don’t get a service dog and expect perfection.
If you want prefect get a robot.

Service dogs are animals with instincts, personalities, quirks. Just because they’re trained and have privileges doesn’t remove who they are.

They’re going to trip on their leash, hit their head on a shelf, knock something over wagging their tail, need to be asked a second time etc.

Saturday we were invited to the and we got to demo tricks and talk about service dogs.

Outside of the beginning where Guy’s leash broke and he went after a squirrel causing Fenrir to join in, the dogs did great. I sent them home early because the forecast turned out wrong. It’s just another reminder that no matter how well trained a dog is they will act like a dog and you just have to accept that with working dogs.
