In the beginning, 90% of your Reef chemistry is managed by your salt mix and regular water changes. Choose a good brand. Keep up on your water changes and test for nitrates, phosphates, and alkalinity regularly. As the tank ages, elements will get used up differently and you can begin to dose and make adjustments from there.

Corals eat and digest other organisms.

In addition to absorbing nutrients from photosynthetic algae, most corals are adept at consuming animal and plant matter in the form of Plankton. By sending out small feeder tentacles, corals filter feed the water around them and then digest what they catch in their guts. All of which helps build coral skeleton and helps maintain the metabolism of the coral.

When designing a custom aquarium, always consider how lighting will play a role in the environment. Consider how your home's lighting will affect the aquarium from overhead lights to natural sunlight. Also consider how the aquarium's hues and lighting schedule will affect your day to day and the other lights in a built environment.

Corals fight wars for territory. When two grow too close, they attack each other with stinging tentacles and chemical warfare to defend their space. A reef may look peaceful, but it is a slow, constant battle for real estate.

Species defined as extremely difficult, sometimes only need to be fed the correct diet. Making sure that the species of fish you are keeping are getting all of the fats, fiber, proteins, nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that they need to result in better color, behavior, and immune system. If you find that you can't keep a certain species for longer than 2 to 3 months, it may be because while they are eating they are not eating the diet they need for long-term survivability.

Measure things in the water you cannot see, taste, or smell. Trace elements present in parts per million decide whether or not coral thrives. Caring for a reef means managing chemistry some people never know is there. Run ICP-OES tests every 3 to 6 months to confirm your trace elements are in check.

How much does a saltwater aquarium cost? The short answer is between $50 and $200 per gallon. It depends on the style of tank you get, the complexity of livestock you want to keep, and the amount of equipment you want to purchase. Investing more on the front end saves you time and money on the back end, but be careful not to overbuy on equipment you don't need right now. Don't forget to plan ahead and make sure you leave space for the equipment you do want to buy down the road.

Light determines the rate of plant growth. There are many factors that contribute to plant growth. Light determines the total amount of energy provided by chlorophyll to fuel the whole process. There are other factors that can limit plant growth; like available nutrients, carbon dioxide, and trace elements. However, the entire process is regulated by available light. If you are having an issue with plant growth, you may have a limiting factor. Make sure you have the right amount of light, nutrients, carbon, and trace elements for your specific setup.
