Did you know that September is Animal Pain Awareness Month?
Specializing in neurology, we see a lot of diseases and injuries that result in pain to our furry family members. Sometimes signs of pain are obvious—yelping, groaning, and limping are a few examples.
But what are some other, more subtle indications of pain?
💥 Hiding or being less sociable
💥 Hesitating or refusing to use stairs, jump, or play
💥 Stiffness or changes in posture
💥 Increased clinginess, lethargy, or restlessness
💥 Irritability and aggression, especially when touched
💥 Excessive panting
💥 Increased licking, chewing, or grooming
💥 Having more accidents in the house or outside the litterbox
💥 Changes in facial expression (e.g., grimacing)
..and many more.
If your pet starts showing any of these signs, it's important to reach out to your primary veterinarian (or your established neurologist!) so they can be evaluated. Luckily, there are many treatments and pain medications that are available that could help your pet feel more comfortable. We all hope our animals can live their best lives, pain-free!
