Welcome back to the herd, Ember! 💛

Ember, the dark bay with two white socks, is one of the Equine Medical Center’s dedicated blood donors, a small herd of special horses who have collectively donated thousands of liters of blood to help patients in critical care.

Recently, it was Ember’s turn to receive care. She spent 59 days in our hospital under treatment, and we’re thrilled to share that she’s now fully recovered.

Congratulations to Dr. Alex Grobman! 🎉 Alex received the Best Presentation Quality award at the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) Large Animal Residents’ Forum for her presentation, “Endoscopic Lavage Versus Needle Lavage for Equine Synovial Sepsis.”

The award was presented at the 2026 ACVS Surgery Summit, held October 7–10 at the Charlotte Convention Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

We are so proud of you, Dr. Grobman. This well-deserved recognition reflects your hard work, dedication, and commitment to advancing equine surgery!

Meet two of our Rotating Medicine and Surgery Interns! 🐴

Dr. Sarah Diaz-Cruz and Dr. Caroline Flood joined Virginia Tech's Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center in July for a one-year rotating medicine and surgery internship.

In 2025, Dr. Diaz-Cruz earned her DVM from Midwestern University College of Veterinary Medicine in Glendale, Arizona. She then completed an internship at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Wellington, Florida, before coming to the Equine Medical Center.

Dr. Flood graduated from the Royal Veterinary College, University of London, earlier this year. While in vet school, she worked as an undergraduate surgical intern at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, Kentucky. She's also a familiar face here: before pursuing her veterinary degree, Caroline worked at the Equine Medical Center, first as a nursing assistant and later as a veterinary service technician.

EQUINE HEALTH ALERT – Howard County, Maryland

On October 5, the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) shared that the Maryland Department of Agriculture had confirmed two equine disease cases at two different locations in Howard County, Maryland: Equine Herpesvirus – Respiratory (EHV-4) and Equine Herpesvirus – Respiratory (EHV-1)

The vaccination status of these horses is unknown.

From Brazil to Virginia Tech, one undergraduate is tackling a question every horse owner has asked: Do equine joint supplements actually help? 🐴

Joint stress affects performance horses all over the world. That's why undergraduate researcher Priscila Wadt Puglisi Franco is investigating equine joint supplements at Virginia Tech's Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center. Her research could matter to riders, trainers, and veterinarians far beyond Virginia.

⚠️ DISEASE ALERT: MARYLAND ⚠️

Two new equine disease cases were reported by the Maryland Department of Agriculture this week and shared by the Equine Disease Communication Center:

🐴 EHV-1 (respiratory), Baltimore County
A 4-yr-old Warmblood mare was confirmed with EHV-1 on September 22 and is under treatment. EHV-1 spreads easily through nose-to-nose contact, shared buckets and tack, and people's hands.

🦟 West Nile Virus, Cecil County
A 15-year-old Quarter Horse mare was confirmed with WNV on September 18 and was sadly euthanized. WNV is spread by mosquitoes, not horse-to-horse.

🐴 Real-World Learning in Action!

Today, a group of veterinary technology students from Blue Ridge Community and Technical College visited Virginia Tech's Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center.

Students reviewed IV and IM injection protocols with Equine Medical Center Clinical Instructor Dr. Megan Marchitello and Operating Room Supervisor Payton Lavoie. Clinical exposure helps to build the skills they'll need to sit for the VTNE and become Registered Veterinary Technicians. 🩺

🐎🥍 On Wednesday, September 16, Australian polocrosse team members from New South Wales toured Virginia Tech's Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center.

Polocrosse originated in Australia and is an evolving equestrian team sport here in the US that combines the rules and riding skills of polo with the netted stick handling of lacrosse.

The Australian team is visiting the Heartland Polocrosse Club, based in Round Hill, Virginia.
