A mare came to the Virginia Tech's Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center in February with a sick foal. Our clinician recognized her on sight, because she'd saved that same mare's life as a newborn, seven years earlier! 🐴

Continentalcongres. Born in crisis. Grew up to race. Came home to give birth. And brought her filly right back to the team that started it all.

A group of The Madeira School students, based in McLean, Virginia, recently toured the Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center, where they were personally hosted by the center's Director, Dr. Michael Erskine.

🐴The students learnt about the center’s cutting-edge diagnostic equipment and specialized surgical suites, getting an up-close look at the world of equine veterinary medicine at the highest level.

🐄🔔 More cowbell? YES, please. 🐴🎉 A huge thank you to Mary and Glenn Fruehan (pictured) from Ridgely, West Virginia, for donating a beautiful Swiss cowbell to celebrate our equine cancer patients when they leave the hospital in remission.

Just like the tradition in human hospitals, our cancer patients will now get the celebration they deserve as they walk out of our doors —a bell ringing loud in their honor. Here's to many, many bell-ringing days ahead! 🔔🐎

UPDATE TO Equine Herpesvirus – Neurologic (EHV-1) case reported on April 17

ON APRIL 28, the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) reported that the horse's home farm (13 horses) in Loudoun County, VA, has been quarantined by the state veterinarian. According to the state veterinarian's office, as of April 28, 2026, there are NO NEW CASES associated with this alert.

ON APRIL 17, the EDCC confirmed that a case of Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM), the neurologic form of EHV-1, had been reported at a horse show in Culpeper County, Virginia. The horse has since been euthanized.
