One of the first things I do at any pet sit is wash the food and water bowls and fountains. Why do I do that? Because pet owners, myself included, often take the easy way out by topping off the water bowl or refilling the food bowl without cleansing it. That leads to the growth of bacteria and biofilm that can cause upsets and infections in a pet's system.

I used to think that cleaning my dogs' fountain once a month when I changed the filters was plenty, but looking over the instructions for the fountain it recommends cleaning both the fountain and the pump every two weeks. Now I have changed my schedule to include that maintenance, so that goes a long way toward maintaining my dogs' health and well-being.

Recent problems with UTIs in one of my dogs has caused me to reassess what I do for her care. This is one easy way to reduce the risk of recurring infections. Please take a look at the video below to understand what biofilm can do to your cat or dog.

Oscar loves his Trader Joe's bag!
Here is some good advice for pet owners. If you are going to leave bags around for your pets to play with, use paper bags, not plastic, which carries the risk of suffocation. Also cut the handles so the pet doesn't get tangled; that could really stress your pet.

Even a short time outside can wipe out a pet. Please watch your furry kids closely and make sure they have access to plenty of water to prevent heat related problems.
