Dangers of some "boutique" dog foods, particularly grain free.

Please know that Summit is still seeing many cases of diet-associated dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs. DCM causes the heart muscle to weaken and the heart to become very large, which can lead to heart failure and death if not properly treated. The types of dog food that are suspected to contribute to this condition are sometimes referred to as "non-traditional diets." These are commonly grain free, but not always. The diets in question typically contain large ratios of peas, lentils, chickpeas, dry beans, potatoes and sweet potatoes. The exact reason why we are still seeing this phenomenon has not been pinpointed yet, but intensive data analysis is uncovering new information.
