Tuesday Tip: Bank Genetics for the Future 🧬

As breeding season gets underway, now is a great time to think beyond this year’s matings and consider the long-term future of your genetics.

Flushing your ewes and does and freezing embryos allows you to build a bank of valuable genetics that can be stored for future use. If you’re looking to preserve genetics from a proven donor, create more flexibility in future breeding decisions, or safeguard genetics you may want to utilize down the road, embryo freezing can be a valuable tool for your program.

Building an embryo inventory now also gives you the flexibility to plan future matings on your timeline rather than relying solely on a donor’s availability each breeding season.

This presentation (approved for 1 RACE CE hour) will review the literature and current data to answer two plain questions: What do we know about small ruminant IVF, and where does the field really stand today? We will cover published benchmarks, limitations holding the technology back, oocyte competence, sire and donor variability, seasonality, and cryopreservation differences. The session will also present recent datasets of more than 740 IVF procedures and 9,000 oocytes from RSG's sheep and goat program, examining what drives success, where the bottlenecks are, and where small ruminant IVF is headed next.

RSG evaluates frozen semen using specific quality control standards before determining whether a sample passes.

For an RSG Pass, frozen semen must meet all of the following:
🔬 30 million+ live cells
🔬 50% or greater live cells
🔬 Progression greater than two cell lengths per second
🔬 Less than 15% abnormal morphology

A sample may fail if just one of RSG’s minimum quality standards is not met. When a product earns an RSG Pass, it is considered suitable for use in LAI or ET procedures.
