I’m going to say something that might make some people angry.
IF YOU GET A DOG, YOU KEEP THAT DOG FOR LIFE!!!
A dog is not something you bring home until they become inconvenient.
They tore up your couch? Get another couch.
They’re having behavioral problems? Train them. Work with them. Help them.
Your living situation changes? Find a way to make it work.
You have to move? Find somewhere your dog can go with you.
Life gets difficult? Figure it out.
Because there is one option that should NEVER be the easy answer:
ABANDONING YOUR DOG!!!
People need to understand that dogs form real emotional bonds with us. You are their family. You are their home. You are their security. Their entire world can revolve around the people they trust.
And then one day, some of them are handed over to strangers, dropped at a shelter, given away, or left wondering where the person they loved went.
They don’t understand your excuses.
They just know you’re gone.
When you bring a dog into your home, you are making a promise. Not a promise for as long as it’s convenient. Not until you move. Not until you get a new relationship. Not until the dog gets old. Not until they develop problems.
FOR LIFE!!!!!
There are dogs sitting in shelters right now confused, frightened, stressed, and waiting because somebody decided they were disposable. I know I seen these dogs with my own eyes. In the shelter tormented by the emotional damage already taking place.
THEY ARE NOT DISPOSABLE!!!!
Dogs cannot stand up at a microphone and demand better treatment.
They cannot tell the world what abandonment does to them.
They cannot ask people to stop treating them like possessions that can simply be replaced or given away when life gets inconvenient.
They are the voiceless who need a voice.
And I will gladly be that voice.
I will stand up for them.
I will speak for them.
And I will never apologize for believing that when you tell a dog, “You’re coming home with me,” that home should mean FOREVER.
Before you get a dog, ask yourself one question:
“Am I prepared to stand by this animal for the rest of their life—when it’s easy AND when it’s hard?”
If the answer isn't yes, don't get the dog.
Because they deserve someone whose love doesn’t come with an expiration date.
