Before I was a bodyworker, I was a surgical RN. At the time of this story, I had Frosty (my gelding frequently shown in my emails and videos) for maybe 6 months? At only 4 years old, he developed osteomyelitis in one of his hooves from chronic abscessing. This led to months of stall rest and medications, a painful recovery process, and a less than happy horse!

I felt helpless, but trusted my vet and farrier team and followed the treatment plan to a T. However, I felt like there must be SOMETHING that I could be doing to help him feel more comfortable and help with all of that compensation he was struggling with through his body as he healed. A kind fellow boarder showed me a few massage techniques that she had learned over the years. The responses that I saw in him from just these few techniques is what led me to become a certified massage therapist! I began my educational journey the exact same month.

I know that isn't possible for most of my readers and clients, nor would it be feasible for us all to be professional bodyworkers! BUT, I do feel that having some skills in your back pockets to keep your horses feeling comfortable and prevent injuries in the first place by keeping them supple and moving freely is so important! That's exactly why I decided to create this course.

My Bodywork Basics course will teach you to confidently perform 15 of my favorite techniques with your own horses. I chose these exercises carefully to be applicable to most all horses, provided they are sound of course (that's a whole other ballgame when we're discussing lameness recovery).

I've also included a bonus downloadable Barn Cheat Sheet - this is perfect to take with you and keep handy so you can remember what you've learned when practicing at the barn!

Good morning! I've been busy working on a project, and it's finally ready - I'm so excited to share it with you! If you follow my page, then I already know that you care about the health, happiness and fitness of your horse. After all, that's what we talk about here!

As a horse owner, you do your best to keep your animals healthy and comfortable. But here's the truth: most horses carry some tension, stiffness, and postural imbalances that limit their performance and comfort. You may already have them on a regular bodywork schedule with your local professional, but you're unsure how to help your horse improve between these sessions. I've got you!

My Bodywork Basics course will give you the knowledge to confidently perform effective techniques to help your horse be more balanced, release tension and improve postural strength, thus moving more confidently and comfortably. This course teaches you practical, hands-on techniques you can use right in your own barn. You'll be amazed at the difference in your horse as you keep these up!

A few days ago, I had the opportunity to teach some young equestrians at Boots and Bridles 4H. We went over some stretches and exercises that they can use with their own horses at home. It was a great evening with some pretty great people! Thanks again for having me out!

If your horse struggles to lift their tail, chances are they are struggling with restrictions somewhere along their topline. Rather than forcing the tail up for tail pulls or tail circles, I recommend gently guiding the tail up and holding as shown here (perhaps even lower to start if severly restricted). With some patience on your part in allowing that tail to soften, your horse will likely get a big release from this simple technique. Try it out and let me know what you think!

Join Clifford and I to chat about the stifles! Where they are, what they do, how to keep them strong! What are your go-to exercises for strength in this area?

Does your horse pin their ears when you tighten your girth or even while you groom him behind his forelegs? Chances are, he has sore posterior (caudal) pectoral muscles. The first thing many owners think is, "Oh no! My horse has ulcers!" While that may be true, there are number of other reasons your horse may be sore or reactive here.

Does your horse ride on forehand?
Does he struggle to engage the abdomen? Does he have sore feet?
Does he have arthritis somewhere in the forelegs?
Is there a saddle or girth fit issue?
Have your workouts been placing extra strain on the thoracic sling area?

These are all ideas to talk over with your bodyworker at your next appointment.

Aside from correcting medical or tack fit concerns, how can you help between professional appointments? Walk raised cavaletti, back your horse up a slight hill with a level head (shoot for 10-20 steps when they're strong enough), work on lateral movements in hand and under saddle, and practice turns on forehand to work on abducting those muscles.

Hope this helps! Got questions? Let me know!

Let's talk about balance pads! Are these something that you use in your horse's exercise routine?

Check out my full length video on YouTube for more details on using this great tool with your horses. Let me know if you need the link...I'll be happy to send it your way!
