Animal Health Center of Leawood Animal Health Center of Leawood is a locally owned, full service veterinary medical and surgical facility for dogs and cats.

Animal Health Center of Leawood is a dream turned reality for Morgan. Since she could speak, Morgan has wanted to be a veterinarian. So she created a veterinary hospital where they treat patients and clients like family. In 2021, Dr. Nancy McClain's joined the practice. Like Dr. Wilcox, Dr. McClain's love for veterinary medicine began in grade school when she adopted a kitten the family named Tequila. Dr. Wilcox and Dr. McClain are Fear-Free Certified Professionals. They have taken an oath and done specialized training to make your pet's veterinary visits as comfortable as possible.

🩺🐾 HAPPY VETERINARY TECHNICIAN WEEK!

Behind every wagging tail or scared patient, is a veterinary technician who gives their whole heart to the job.

Vet Techs are the nurses, the comforters, the cheerleaders, the problem-solvers, the professional p**p inspectors, the extra set of hands, and sometimes the emotional support humans for both pets AND their people. We clean up the messes, celebrate the victories, hold paws through the scary moments, and love our patients like our own. Even on the hardest days, we show up, advocate for the voiceless, and give these animals everything we've got. ❤️

This week, we're celebrating the incredible veterinary technicians who make a difference every single day. You are valued, you are appreciated, and the veterinary world wouldn't be the same without you!

👻 SHOW US YOUR PET’S HALLOWEEN COSTUME! 👻

It’s officially spooky season, which means it’s time to see the adorable, ridiculous, and mildly humiliating Halloween costumes your pets are rocking.

Is your pet a spooky ghost? A tiny superhero? A hot dog? A pumpkin? Or are they simply dressed as “a pet who has no idea why their humans keep doing this to them”? 😂

📸 Drop a photo of your costumed pets in the comments!
We want to see ALL the spooky cuteness!

Bonus points for dramatic poses, questionable costume choices, and pets who look deeply offended.

Let the Halloween pet parade begin! 🐾

🧨 July 4th is approaching quickly & we want you to help your 3 or 4 legged besties feel safe and at ease as much as they can, on one of the scariest days of their year.
🧨 This coming holiday weekend is the most common time of year for pets to go missing. To keep your companions secure, update their microchip/ID tags, keep them safely indoors in an escape-proof room with soothing background noise, and consult us regarding calming medications if your pet has severe noise anxiety.
🧨 It is also the most common time of the year for foreign body obstructions and severe GI upset. Yikes! Please remember that corn cobs and rib/chicken bones cannot pass in the intestines & there are a number of things at the table this weekend that will give your dog an expensive tummy ache. Safest to stick with treats they already have had and enjoy!

🥵 EXTREME HEAT WARNING, til Tuesday in KC!
Heat stroke in pets can go from 0 to 100, quite quick.

Emergency clinics note that it's one of the most dangerous - and underestimated - emergencies they see every summer.

Please be mindful of when you take your walks this week, and all summer:
📍 It is recommended to do first thing in the morning, or late at night.
📍 If you can't place the back of your hand on the sidewalk for 5-7 seconds without removing because it's too hot, it's too hot for paw pads.
📍 Stick to shaded paths.
📍 Bring fresh, cool water for both you and your pet.
📍 NEVER leave your pet in the car, unattended.

🌡️ If you are worried that your dog is experiencing heat stroke, the best course of action is to hose your dog down with cool or tepid water and turn on the air conditioning in your car while on the way into a veterinary hospital. NEVER use alcohol or ice packs directly on their skin. This can constrict blood vessels and actually trap heat inside the body instead of releasing it. {VEG}

🐾 If you have questions, please give us a call.

Heatstroke in dogs can show up as panting, drooling, and other concerning symptoms. Know the signs and follow our vet's preventative safety tips to help keep your dog safe.
