Working with kids properly with dogs is imperative. Dogs and kids are both just as unpredictable as one another... so proper interactions and education keep both safe and productive. So many of my clients knew Adalee as a Itty bitty barely walking kiddo...who already knew how to walk dogs... and have watched her grow. I'll have to find the pack walk pics we used to go on! And now....shes 17 wowza 😔 😟

The animal world is a tricky space to work within... and it's not just because I'm working with animals.

I'm constantly bridging the gap in communication between two entirely different species... two very different ways of perceiving, processing, and responding to the world...

here's where it gets interesting...

Animals are often communicating quite clearly... they love black & white through body language, movement, spatial pressure, association, and behavioral responses.
It's the human interpretation that complicates the conversation.

Humans communicate through language, expectations, emotions, assumptions, and interpretations shaped by their own experiences.

those two systems don't always agree.

A dog communicating discomfort may be labeled stubborn.. uncertainty may be labeled disobedient.

A dog responding to inconsistent communication may be labeled difficult.

Most times... the animal is responding exactly as it has been taught, just not in the way the human intended.

After 18+ years working within animal behavior, one thing has become increasingly apparent to me...

I'm not simply teaching animals how to live with humans. I'm teaching humans how to understand the animals they've invited into their lives.

I'm translating between what a human *believes* they're communicating and what an animal is *actually receiving.*

That requires looking beyond the behavior itself...

Behavior doesn't exist in isolation. It develops within relationships, environments, patterns, and repeated interaction and responsiveness.

Sometimes the animal needs rehabilitation... the human needs education... and both need to learn an entirely new way of communicating with one another.

The irony...

We expect animals to learn our language, adapt to our lifestyles, understand our expectations, and regulate themselves within environments we create..

Yet how often do we take the same responsibility to understand theirs?

Some of the greatest misunderstandings in animal behavior is believing communication has occurred just because we've expressed what we wanted.

Communication isn't just what we intend to convey. It's also what the other being actually receives..

That is where the real work begins... theres a method to the madness in every single step we take through this training...wether I suggest walking...no talking...resetting your own and your dog's nervous system...meditate... silence...build confidence...work through our own and our dogs frustration and anxiety.

There's two pieces to this equation and if one is lacking...it falls apart... I see what is unseen...over looked... missed... or simply just thought of as it is what it is... and I help create change both within the dog...and the family systems they are apart of...which is the support of all dogs.
