When your pet needs answers, every minute can count. At Mountain West Veterinary Specialists, our in-house laboratory helps our veterinary team get important diagnostic information quickly—so we can make informed decisions about your pet’s care without unnecessary delays.

✨ Benefits of in-house testing:
* Faster results for many important tests mean less wait time

When the specialty hospital Dr. Jeff Simmons helped build was sold to a corporate group, he and his colleagues faced a choice most specialists will recognize.

They walked away and built their own.

Eight years later, Mountain West Veterinary Specialists has two hospitals in Utah, a doctor-owned board that actually works in the building, and specialists on three 12-hour shifts with four days off a week.

Jeff is my first guest on Zest for Life — the podcast I created to celebrate the veterinarians and specialists who make the world a better place. After 27 years as a veterinary recruiter, I've heard a lot of stories. This one is worth your time.

We talk about:
▸ Leaving academia for private practice
▸ Building a culture where staff can buy into ownership
▸ Why decisions made in the building beat decisions made three states away
▸ Why so many specialists are quietly moving to Salt Lake City

🐾 Niko’s Journey 🐾

This sweet French Bulldog came to Mountain West Veterinary Specialists for treatment of Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS).

Because some breed’s shortened skulls can result in narrowed airways, they may struggle to breathe—especially during anesthesia and recovery. Niko required continuous monitoring in our ICU and our advanced respiratory technology helped our team safely support him through his care.

Way to go Niko! 💙 We wish you the best in your recovery!
