👩‍🏫 School Is Starting... Your Pet Notices

As the school year begins, your family's daily routine changes, and your pet notices those changes, too. Dogs and cats thrive on consistency, so a quieter house or changes in activity can sometimes lead to stress or boredom.

Some pets may:

🐶 Pace or seem restless
🐱 Bark or vocalize more than usual
🐈 Follow family members closely before leaving the house
🐕 Sleep more during the day
🐩 Become destructive from boredom
🐈‍⬛ Have changes in appetite or energy

Here are a few simple ways to help your pet adjust:

• Keep feeding, walks and playtime on a consistent schedule
• Take your dog for a walk or spend a few minutes playing before everyone leave for the day
• Offer enrichment such as puzzle feeders, treat-stuffed toys, or safe chew toys to keep them mentally engaged
• Leave a radio or television on at a low volume if your pet is accustomed to household sounds
• Set aside quality time together when everyone returns home, even if it's just 15 to 20 minutes of play, training, or cuddling

Most pets adjust well within a couple of weeks. However, if your pet shows severe anxiety, stops eating, has accidents in the house or becomes destructive, contact your veterinarian. These may be signs of separation anxiety or another medical or behavioral concern that can often be managed with the right treatment.

A little planning can help make the transition back to school easier for every member of the family, including the four-legged variety!

Planning a summer road trip with your pet? A little preparation can help keep everyone safe and comfortable.

Before you hit the road:
• Secure your pet in a well-ventilated crate or with a crash-tested safety harness attached to a seat belt. Unrestrained pets can be injured during sudden stops or become a distraction to the driver.
• Never allow your pet to ride in the front seat or with their head hanging out the window.
• Pack plenty of fresh water, food, medications, waste bags, a leash, and copies of any necessary medical or vaccination records.
• Take breaks every 2 to 3 hours so your pet can stretch, drink water, and relieve themselves.
• If your pet is prone to motion sickness or anxiety, talk with your veterinarian before your trip about safe treatment options.
• Never leave your pet unattended in a parked vehicle. Even with the windows cracked, temperatures inside a car can rise to dangerous levels within minutes.

Whether you're heading across town or across the country, planning ahead helps make summer travel safer and more enjoyable for both you and your pet.
