Copper gives our homemade horse popsicles four hooves up! 🐴🧊💙

Last week, some of our Manes & Miracles clients made frozen treats with carrots, apples, blueberries, bananas, and a splash of apple juice—and Copper was more than happy to be the official taste tester!

It kept rolling away, but Copper wasn’t about to let a runaway popsicle come between him and his snack. 😂🍎🥕🫐🍌

💥Help Us Recover From a Blindsiding Loss💥

We have something difficult to share with our MidAtlantic Horse Rescue community, and we’re asking for your help.

Recently, our organization became the victim of a sophisticated financial scam resulting in the loss of $22,679.21

One of our long time trusted vendors had their computer compromised. The individuals responsible were able to use spoofed email addresses, creating fraudulent invoices from this vendor that looked legitimate. They included fake emails that gave approval for payment. Two ACH payments were then processed by our previous bookkeeper without her realizing that this was a sophisticated cyber scam.

By the time the situation was discovered, the funds had already been transferred and sent overseas. We immediately reported the incident to the appropriate authorities, including the FBI, FCC, and state police, and worked with the banks involved to try to recover the money. Unfortunately, after 7 weeks and countless hours spent exhausting those avenues, we have been told that the funds are not recoverable. In order to prevent this from happening again, we have hired a new bookkeeper who attends monthly continuing education sessions about the latest cyber scams and who does not pay any invoices without verbal approval.

For a nonprofit like ours, $22,679.21 is a significant loss. That is money we use to provide feed, veterinary care, farrier services, rehabilitation, and everything else necessary to care for the horses who depend on us.

The need for those funds has not diminished.

In recent months, we have taken in horses from difficult circumstances, including a group of eight thoroughbreds rescued from a Louisiana auction lot as well as three neglected cases from West Virginia. These rescued horses still need the same care, regardless of the unexpected financial setback our organization has experienced. Our horses are the true ones victimized here.

We debated whether to share this publicly, but ultimately decided that transparency with our supporters is important. Rather than allowing this loss to impact the horses in our care, we are asking our community to help us recover a portion of what was lost.

If you are able to make a donation, no matter the amount, it will go directly toward the ongoing care of our horses and help us keep moving forward with our mission of providing Thoroughbred aftercare.

If you aren’t able to donate, sharing this fundraiser is just as valuable. Every share helps us reach someone who may be able to help.

We are incredibly grateful for the people who continue to stand behind these horses and the work of MidAtlantic Horse Rescue. We have faced difficult situations before, and with the support of our community, we will continue on and prevail, for the horses who need us.

Because we are a fully accredited 501c3 non profit organization, your donations are fully tax deductible to the extent of the law. Thank you for helping us turn an unfortunate loss into an opportunity to keep making a difference.

🐴 Two organizations. Two distinct missions. One shared love for people and horses.

We often receive questions about the relationship between Manes & Miracles of the River Valley and Big Horse Riding Academy, so we wanted to explain how we work together.

Manes & Miracles Of The River Valley is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides equine-assisted therapy services. Its horses, volunteers, therapists, and supporters work together to help children and families accomplish meaningful goals—often while forming some pretty special bonds along the way.

Big Horse Riding Academy LLC is a separate, independently operated, for-profit riding and horsemanship program. BHRA offers recreational riding classes and total horsemanship education; it is not a therapy provider, and BHRA students are not automatically patients of Manes & Miracles.

BHRA is blessed to operate from the Manes & Miracles facility, and a portion of the income from BHRA classes goes back to Manes & Miracles for the use of the facility. While the two organizations remain separate in their enrollment, finances, policies, and programming, we are proud to work alongside one another and share a commitment to excellent horse care, education, inclusion, and community.

And here is something we really want everyone to know: You do not have to ride—or even want to ride—to be part of what happens here. ❤️

Manes & Miracles has volunteer opportunities for many different interests and abilities, including:

🐴 Helping with horse care and barn chores
🤝 Assisting horses and patients alongside the therapy team
🧹 Ranch cleanup, organizing, and property projects
🎉 Helping with events, fundraising, and community outreach
🗂️ Supporting the behind-the-scenes work that keeps everything moving

Some volunteers love working directly with the horses. Others would rather paint, clean, organize, set up tables, take photos, help with paperwork, or lend a hand at an event. Every one of those roles matters.

As a nonprofit, Manes & Miracles also depends on donations made directly to the organization. Those gifts help provide feed, hay, veterinary care, farrier care, equipment, property upkeep, facility improvements, and the many everyday necessities required to safely care for the horses and support the nonprofit’s therapeutic mission. Donations to Manes & Miracles may be tax-deductible as allowed by law and support Manes & Miracles—not the business operations of BHRA.

The riders may be the ones you see in the saddle, but there is an entire community holding the reins behind them.

If you have been looking for a way to give your time, talents, resources, or simply a few willing hands, we would love to help you find your place here. Comment below or send Manes & Miracles a message to learn more about volunteering or making a donation. 💙

There is room in this mission for you—even if you never climb into the saddle.

If you’re trying to squeeze barn time somewhere between work, family, relationships, responsibilities, and everything else life asks of you… this program is for you. 🤍

You don’t need unlimited free time. You don’t need to have ridden your whole life. And you don’t need to wait until life finally “slows down.”

Big Horse Riding Academy welcomes adults who are riding for the first time, returning after years away, or simply looking for a place to breathe, learn, and feel like themselves again.

We may not have endless hours to spend in the saddle—but we can make room for the things that make us feel most alive.

If you’ve been waiting for a sign to start riding, this is it. Send us a message to learn more about our adult classes! 🐴

Welcome to Big Horse Riding Academy—your corner of the horse world.
