In the forests of northern Mongolia, a young woman from the Tsaatan tribe rides a reindeer across rocky terrain, continuing a way of life passed down through generations.

The Tsaatan people are among the last remaining reindeer herders on Earth, relying on the animals for transport, food, clothing, and cultural identity.

Reindeer are treated not as livestock, but as companions within a deeply interwoven human–animal relationship.

Modern pressures such as climate change, tourism, and economic displacement increasingly threaten this fragile balance.

The urgency surrounding their survival is profound. With only a few hundred Tsaatan remaining, the loss of reindeer herding would mean more than cultural change—it would mark the disappearance of an entire worldview shaped by cooperation with nature. Preserving their way of life represents a broader struggle to protect living traditions before they vanish under the weight of modern expansion.

Scientists now see outdoor cats as one of the world’s biggest wildlife threats.

In the U.S. alone, free-ranging cats kill an estimated 1–4 billion birds and 6–22 billion mammals each year — far more than collisions with windows or cars.

Globally, cats have caused or contributed to over 60 extinctions, especially on islands. Conservation experts now call them an invasive predator and urge people to keep cats indoors and manage feral populations — to protect both wildlife and the cats themselves.
