Sharing my Nikki’s recent diagnosis of glaucoma in her left eye. She is a 12 year old Bouvier des Flandres and my sweet girl.
Glaucoma is when pressure inside the eye gets very high causing pain, redness and blindness. We caught things quickly and started aggressive medical therapy to decrease pressure and alleviate pain. Unsuccessful, unfortunately. 😔 roughly 50% of acute dog glaucoma cases will not improve with therapy.
When medication fails to lower pressure and restore vision , then palliative procedures are considered. With a blind eye, we opted for enucleation(surgical removal of eye).
Happy to report she is recovering well and feeling much better! Hopefully with preventative medication we can maintain vision in her remaining eye for as long as possible.
