RafStar K9 has been growing, and I'm excited to finally share our newly redesigned website!

Over the years, my work has taken me from helping individual dogs and their families to working alongside animal shelters, rescues, and organizations across the country. Every experience has helped shape how I approach behavior, training, and animal welfare.
And now, we've brought it all together in one place.

Not all of my work with dogs happens with a leash in my hand.

Sometimes it’s behind a computer screen, working with shelter staff and volunteers to help them better understand the dogs in their care.

Virtual training may look a little different from being out in the yards or walking through kennels, but the goal is the same.

Helping people recognize behavior, understand what they’re seeing, make safer handling decisions, and create better opportunities for the dogs they’re working with.

One of the things I enjoy most about this work is knowing that the information doesn’t stop with the people attending the training.

They take that knowledge back into their kennels, their playgroups, and their everyday interactions with the animals.

And that’s where the impact can really grow.

I can work directly with one dog and make a difference in that dog’s life. But when I help a team build their skills and confidence, that knowledge has the potential to benefit hundreds of dogs over time.

Better understanding leads to better decisions. And better decisions create better opportunities for the animals.

Whether it’s in person or through a screen, I’m grateful for every opportunity to share what I’ve learned and continue learning alongside the people doing this work every day.

Raya has apparently decided that “constant companion” includes bathroom supervision. Privacy wasn’t part of the agreement. 😂

Wherever I am, she’s right there, even if it means stretching out on the tile while she waits. My little shadow and very dedicated bathroom buddy.

She’s still looking for her adoptive family. In the meantime, we’re working on everyday skills and household manners to help her become a solid housemate and prepare her for life in her future home.

We could also use some help with her next round of care: more food, plus funding for her spay, microchip, and heartworm test.

Meet Freedom.

I had the chance to spend a little time with him at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, and in about 20 minutes we were able to make some meaningful progress with his on-leash dog reactivity.

The goal wasn’t to make him ignore everything around him. It was to help him stay under threshold, redirect that energy, and start making better choices.

By the end of the session, Freedom was checking in with me, staying more engaged, and moving past other dogs with much better focus.

That’s one of the things I love about behavior work. Sometimes a small adjustment in handling, timing, distance, and communication can completely change what a dog is able to do in that moment.

Twenty minutes doesn’t “fix” a behavior, but it can give you a pretty clear glimpse of what’s possible.

And Freedom definitely showed us that.

Some dogs just stick with you.

I met Ivy at North Oklahoma Humane this week. She recently lost a rescue opportunity because of her reactivity around other dogs, so we got her out into the yard to take a closer look.

She came out stiff, a little forward, and clearly carrying some feelings about dogs being around her.

Is it learned behavior? High defensive behavior? Something else entirely?

I don’t know yet.

What I do know is that she was incredibly steerable. She checked in constantly, stayed connected to her handler, and even with dogs around the yard, she kept choosing to come by me instead of escalating into them.

That matters.

A muzzle can make a dog harder for some people to see past. Reactivity can make that even harder. And shelter life is already asking a lot from a dog before we add another reason for someone to keep walking.

Dogs like Ivy break my heart a little, because sometimes there’s a very workable dog underneath behavior that has become their entire reputation.

So I made her team an offer.

Going forward, I’m going to work with Ivy’s shelter advocates through virtual one-on-one sessions to help them work through as much of this as we can. The goal isn’t to turn her into a dog who has to love every dog she sees.

The goal is much more realistic:

Help her learn how to exist around other dogs without feeling like she has to overreact.

Give her handlers more tools.

Build on the connection and steerability she already has.

And hopefully give Ivy a better shot at the opportunity she almost had.

I’m not completely sure what it was about this dog.

I just knew I didn’t want to walk away without trying to help.

Sometimes that’s enough reason to start.

It takes a community. And Raya is gaining one.

As I’m back on the road working with shelters, I wanted to give a big thank you to Content K9 Dog Training Co. for stepping in and putting their own time and effort into Raya while I’m gone.

This isn’t just about having someone “watch” her.

They’re continuing to work with her, giving her new experiences, expanding her circle of people, and helping us learn even more about who Raya is outside of my home and outside of working exclusively with me.

All of that matters when the goal isn’t simply to train a dog, it’s to prepare her for the right home.

One of the things I want to continue building through RafStar K9 is a stronger community around dogs like Raya. Trainers, shelters, rescues, fosters, adopters, businesses and individuals all bringing something to the table.

No one person or organization has to do everything.

But when people are willing to contribute what they can; time, knowledge, training, transportation, supplies, donations, exposure or simply sharing a dog’s story, we can create much better opportunities for shelter dogs who need a little more support before finding their way home.

Content K9 is contributing their time and expertise to Raya’s journey, and I’m incredibly appreciative of them for that.

And Raya’s story is still being written.

We’re continuing to cover her training, care, food, supplies and everything else that goes into preparing her for adoption and ultimately finding the home that actually fits her.

What does a cinematography degree have to do with dog training and animal welfare?

For me, everything.

I officially earned my Bachelor of Science in Digital Cinematography from Full Sail University, graduating as Salutatorian and receiving the Course Director’s Award in Producing.

But this isn’t just another credential to hang on the wall.

It’s another tool I can use to help tell better stories about dogs, behavior, shelters, rescues, and the people doing the work behind the scenes.

RafStar K9 has always been about helping dogs through better understanding, better handling, better training, and better advocacy. Now I get to combine that work even more intentionally with professional cinematography and producing.

I want to create more projects that:

• help shelter dogs get seen
• highlight behavior and training in a way people can actually understand
• give rescues and shelters stronger visual storytelling
• collaborate with brands and organizations that care about animal welfare
• document the people doing meaningful work in this industry

I’m incredibly proud of this accomplishment, but I’m even more excited about what it allows me to build next.
