…at least it should be 🙃

Vino just walked up to a full raw bar…
and said, “I’m good.”

No excitement.
Limited interest.
Just walked away.

Most people would say:
➡️ “He’s not food motivated.”

I disagree, kind of.

He’s just more motivated by the environment (almost all environments) than the food 🙃

And that is where most people get stuck.

Because if your dog only listens when food is constantly being offered…
what happens when life is more interesting than your treat pouch?

👀 Other dogs
👀 New smells
👀 Real-world chaos

That’s where training either holds up… or falls apart.

Can I train a dog like this?

Absolutely.

But I can’t lie - having a dog that’s more food motivated makes things 𝐌𝐔𝐂𝐇 easier.

📢 YOU’RE BORING 📢

Every time you call your dog, they’re asking:

👉 “Is this worth it?” 👈

If the answer is:
➡️ Low energy
➡️ One treat
➡️ No engagement

…they’re going to hesitate or blow you off.

Not because they’re stubborn - but because you’ve become too 𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐃𝐈𝐂𝐓𝐀𝐁𝐋𝐄.

And predictable gets 𝐁𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐆.

The dogs that come back fast, every time?

They don’t know what they’re getting -
they just know it’s going to be 𝐆𝐎𝐎𝐃.

Sometimes it’s food.
Sometimes it’s multiple rewards.
Sometimes it’s play with their favorite toy.

Moral of the story…

I thought I have heard it all 🙃

But now it’s offensive to call people “dog owners?”

Now I’m supposed to call dog owners “guardians” or “pet parents?”

How about this…

I’ll keep using the term “dog owner”
And you can call yourself whatever you want.

Everybody wins!

But why the verbiage change?

Maybe…

➡️ There’s been a push to humanize how we view animals
➡️ The word ‘owner’ started to feel too transactional(not a relationship)
➡️ And honestly… it just sounds nicer

None of that is wrong, I guess 🤷🏽‍♂️

But none of it changes what your dog actually needs.

Clear direction.
Consistent structure.
Leadership he/she can rely on.

Call it whatever you want…

just don’t let the language distract from your responsibility.

You invested in professional dog training.

Now your dog walks like a champion on leash.

But life gets busy…

And you haven’t practiced in 2 months.

Now it’s the weekend, and you decide to hit the farmers market - hundreds of people, dogs everywhere, food on the ground.

What could go wrong?

‼️ Everything‼️

Now your dog is:
➡️ Dragging you down the sidewalk
➡️ Locked onto every dog
➡️ Pulling toward strangers
➡️ Eating whatever they find

But here’s the truth…

Those aren’t “bad behaviors.”

Your dog isn’t being stubborn.

Those are 𝐔𝐍𝐌𝐀𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐀𝐈𝐍𝐄𝐃 𝐒𝐊𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐒.

Your dog didn’t forget - you just stopped reinforcing it and lacked accountability.

😮 And if I’m being 𝐁𝐋𝐔𝐍𝐓 😮

You don’t even hold yourself to that standard!

Miss the gym for a few weeks?
You expect to feel rusty.

Same goes for your dog.

Training isn’t something you teach once.

It’s something you maintain.

Or you lose it.

⁉️𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐔𝐆𝐆𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐎 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐌𝐔𝐍𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐓𝐄 𝐖𝐈𝐓𝐇 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐃𝐎𝐆⁉️

You 𝐍𝐄𝐄𝐃 to understand markers.

So what is a marker — and why does it matter?

At the most basic level, markers tell your dog:

✅ I like that
❌ I don’t like that

They create black-and-white clarity in training.

For this session, I’m teaching Bambi that
“YES” = explode to me and get paid.

This becomes 𝐂𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐋 when you’re teaching behaviors.

‼️ 𝐈𝐌𝐏𝐎𝐑𝐓𝐀𝐍𝐓 ‼️

If you say your marker and move at the 𝐒𝐀𝐌𝐄 time, there’s a high probability your dog is keying off your movement — not the marker.

Now your marker has no real meaning.

Do you 𝐍𝐄𝐄𝐃 to move after marking?

No.

But in this case, my “YES” marker means:
Break position → come collect reward.

So I move intentionally to build speed, intensity, and commitment.

I personally use five markers.
All simple. All clear. All powerful.

When used correctly, communication becomes effortless.

When used wrong…
training becomes frustrating for both ends of the leash 🤔

When doing this, you are not asking for any behaviors!

Most people teach their dog “drop it” or “out.”

Here’s the problem…

Many dogs technically know the command — but they’ve learned how to “game their owner.”

➡️ They drop the item
➡️ Immediately pick it back up

If this sounds familiar, it’s time to change your criteria and raise your standards.

Train it correctly.
Proof it under pressure.
And practice it 𝐁𝐄𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐄 it actually matters.

Because when it really counts — you won’t get a second chance.

𝐍𝐀𝐙 — my boy, my gym buddy, the biggest pain in my 🍑, my best friend…

This birthday hits differently than all the others. The hard truth is, this will probably be your last trip around the sun. Typing that saddens me to my core. But this isn’t about me — this is about celebrating you.

Here’s my promise to you: we’re riding this out together — whether that’s one more month or, with a miracle, years.

Since you got sick, you’ve unlocked a level of emotion and vulnerability in me that I didn’t even realize was still there. For that, I’ll always be grateful 🙏🏽

There would be no BarNone K9 without you. When I got you, I had zero clue about dogs. Little did I know that “mistake” would turn into a life-changing blessing — not just for us, but for every person and dog I’ve been able to help along the way.

Somehow you’re ten years old and still moving through life like you’re one. The joy you bring me, every single day, is impossible to put into words.

Two dogs. Two completely different journeys.
Both changed my life in ways I’ll never fully be able to repay 🐾

‼️ 𝐑𝐄𝐋𝐀𝐗𝐄𝐃 𝐀𝐌𝐎𝐍𝐆𝐒𝐓 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐎𝐒 ‼️

We all say we want our dogs to be calm in public…

But the real question is 𝐇𝐎𝐖 do you actually teach that 🤔

This is 𝐎𝐍𝐄 of several strategies I like to use.
To Luna, this may look 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐎𝐓𝐈𝐂 — but it’s controlled chaos.

My #1 priority here isn’t obedience…

It’s allowing her to 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐂𝐄𝐒𝐒, 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐊, and make decisions while I stay responsible for her 𝐒𝐀𝐅𝐄𝐓𝐘.

So why can’t the average pet owner do this?

➡️ It’s easier to blame the dog
➡️ It takes quality, consistent sessions
➡️ There’s a lack of understanding around:
• body language
• triggers & stress
• advocacy
• markers
• changing associations
• motivation
• relationship

(just to name a few 😂)

Yet those same owners expect their dog to 𝐌𝐀𝐆𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐘 be calm in public…

Yes — even high-drive breeds like Dutch Shepherds & Malinois (don’t get one)

🔥 𝐑𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐌𝐁𝐄𝐑 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐒🔥

Behavior > Obedience

Just because your dog knows 432 commands does 𝐍𝐎𝐓 mean they’re well-behaved.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a dog you don’t need to micromanage…

A dog that’s earned enough trust to make some decisions on their own 🤯

➡️ You have a reliable plan
➡️ Are proactive with training
➡️ The breed fits your lifestyle

Now, can you dismiss every piece of advice I have given and end up with a great dog?

Sure.

“My dog lunged out of nowhere!”

If I had a dollar for every time I heard that 😂

➡️ Here’s the truth ⬅️
Dogs don’t do things out of nowhere.

In this video, Willow goes from casually 𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆 at her environment to a hard 𝐓𝐀𝐑𝐆𝐄𝐓 / 𝐋𝐎𝐂𝐊.

🚨 That’s often the 𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐒𝐓 warning sign that something you won’t like is coming next 🚨

🎯 My goal: interrupt, 𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐋𝐘.
Not during a full-blown meltdown.

I’ll use movement, leash guidance, verbal input — and I tend to reward heavy when she disengages.

➡️ Remember ⬅️
Looking is information but targeting is intent.

If I wait until she’s exploding, learning is gone.
All that’s left is 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐅𝐋𝐈𝐂𝐓 🤦🏽‍♂️

But when I interrupt early?
✔️ Arousal is lower
✔️ The brain is still online
✔️ Real learning can happen

Yes — over time, criteria will be raised.
No — I won’t micromanage forever.

But right now, because of her history, my job is simple:
Don’t let the unwanted behavior get 𝐑𝐄𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐒𝐄𝐃 and gradually, I’ll be able to change her 𝐄𝐌𝐎𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋 response 🤔

Every dog communicates differently — but the signals are always there.
It’s on 𝐘𝐎𝐔 to learn your dog’s language and respond with fair, meaningful feedback.

Dog owners — do you have a 𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐈𝐃 or 𝐇𝐄𝐒𝐈𝐓𝐀𝐍𝐓 dog?

Good news:
👉 It’s very common.

The real question is…

⁉️ Now what? ⁉️

Do you just accept “that’s how my dog is”?

You can…
But I believe that’s doing your dog a 𝐃𝐈𝐒𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐕𝐈𝐂𝐄 and taking the easy way out 🤔

I’m all for 𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄 and meeting a dog where they are. But at some point, it’s time to 𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐆𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐘 𝐏𝐔𝐒𝐇 — and the criteria must be raised.

Let’s be honest:
Kissy noises and treats only get you so far.
Especially when 𝐅𝐄𝐀𝐑 outweighs food motivation.

Soon, I’ll begin adding slight pressure — and that’s when the 𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐁𝐔𝐋𝐁 𝐌𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 happens.

That moment 𝐔𝐍𝐋𝐎𝐂𝐊𝐒 a whole new dog.
A dog that learns doing “hard” things can actually be 𝐅𝐔𝐍 💪🏽

Before I ever push, I’m doing everything possible to build:
✔️ Trust
✔️ Clarity
✔️ Relationship

It’s wild how much more willing a dog is to work 𝐖𝐈𝐓𝐇 you when you invest a little time — instead of forcing everything 🙃

And yes… I’m 100% certain I’ll be 𝐃𝐄𝐌𝐎𝐍𝐈𝐙𝐄𝐃 once I raise her criteria.

If you want your dog to live in a bubble and be afraid of life — that’s your choice.
I will 𝐍𝐎𝐓 do that to any dog, big or small.

𝐀𝐋𝐋 dogs should be capable stepping onto something 6–8” high. And if not, 𝐁𝐎𝐓𝐇 of us have some work to do 😂
