ā€œI’m done buying geckos this yearā€¦ā€ S**E!!

I know I’m not alone on this one! I mean, DAMN, look at her! 🤯 This NON-LW had me in a chokehold, and I finally gave in! This season, I’ve ramped up production and the bank charges. šŸ˜‚ But the truth is, every purchase has a purpose.

I’ve said this before, but whenever I consider adding a gecko to my collection, I always ask myself one question:

ā€œCan I pair this gecko across my entire collection?ā€

It’s not just about what a gecko looks like, but what it can contribute to the projects I’m building towards.

Axanthics have held strong and remained popular in the hobby since their introduction over a decade ago. Since then, we’ve seen the AX gene evolve in some incredible directions, especially internationally.

Stateside, however, I don’t think we’ve seen nearly the same progression. Oftentimes, we’re still seeing Phantoms, dashed pinstripes, flames, and lower-expression Lilly combos and that represents a large portion of what’s being produced with the gene.

Which brings me to a question I’ve asked myself while building my own AX project:

What’s the point of producing a visual if the only goal is producing a visual?

For me, I treat Axanthic like a base color. It should be the canvas, not the finished product. IYKHETYK. šŸ¦Ž

Shockingly, this unusual pink-toed hatchling, which appeared to be related to a Pied morph, unfortunately didn’t make it. I haven’t spent much time researching Pieds, but from the images I’ve looked through and my limited understanding, there appears to be different forms of Pied — some associated with incomplete dominance and others with recessive inheritance. Neither parent’s lineage has any record of producing anything similar, to my knowledge. This is what I’d consider a ā€œone-off.ā€ Parents in last slide.āž”ļø

ā€œCasperā€ Sable Lilly White

This guy’s first season has been an absolute banger, and his kids including the normals have been crushing it!

Sable sat on the back burner for me after it exploded in the hobby because I didn’t want to start a project without a clear vision. The classic Harlequin look is what drew me to Sable in the first place, but my goal was to exaggerate that pattern while preserving the contrast. I think we’ve accomplished exactly that.

Casper was produced here, and he’s executed his task. He’ll be making his exit in the next drop. āœˆļø

I’ve been on a manhunt for future outcross males, and it’s rare to come across one that checks all the boxes, and isn’t directly from a mainline.

I’m always searching for an outcross that’s built from other outcrosses. To me, that’s where selective breeding really begins. Sometimes the gecko that gets you one step closer to your goals isn’t from the breeder everyone knows—it’s from the one you almost scrolled past.

This guy is a combination of some of my favorite pairings from the past, all rolled into one, and exactly the kind of addition I was looking for to heat things up! šŸ”„

100% Het ChoCho Lilly White

This girl was kung fu fighting. šŸ˜‚ ChoCho has become a really compelling project in my collection, and the direction I’m hoping to take this recessive gene feels like I just started a new game. Integrating the traits I’ve spent seasons selectively breeding and layering them into something new is a different kind of excitement. This time around, my goal with the LW gene isn’t high expression or full coverage—it’s to enhance pattern, increase contrast, and let the gecko’s natural traits do the talking. Sometimes, less is more. šŸ”„

Bangarang Ɨ Roulette

Growing out your own productions never gets old.

This beefcake is almost a year old and a second-generation Kaizer kid out of Roulette. The pattern on his laterals is bulletproof, and his white spots are woven into his gold-orange pattern.

I originally held this guy back to continue Kaizer’s line, but with a new roster of males ready to outcross, it’s time for him to make an impact elsewhere.

This one’s lined up to āœˆļø

Bangarang Ɨ Rheya kid progression

One of the best parts of selective pairings is growing babies out and seeing that real before-and-after evolution. This girl is just over 30g and still nowhere near finished developing. Every shed keeps adding something new.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned working with white spot and snowflake patterns, it’s that the snowstorm doesn’t hit all at once… it builds.

TKO by the clutchmate. 🤣

Anyone else hatching little monsters? These babies are from Kazimir Ɨ Lady Luck, a small Harlequin project that’s been a slow burn but it’s definitely heating up. I don’t have many Harlequin projects cooking, but this pairing is throwing some absolute smokers!

Lavender Frappuccino

This one didn’t inherit the red-orange base from my Blood Orange line, but that’s exactly what makes every season exciting. You never know what the line is going to throw.

This guy is from Kona’s final season as a breeder, and he’s a reminder that even repeated pairings don’t always produce the same offspring. Genetics always keep you guessing.

Last photo is a full sibling—a nearly translucent red-based Lilly.
