There is NOT a 4H quality vs Show Quality in Rabbits. If someone is trying to sell you a 4H quality rabbit, ask them what makes the rabbit 4H quality and not ARBA show quality. If they can’t tell you why they’re making that differentiation, shop elsewhere. If they can tell you, you need to decide what’s best for your youth’s success.

Sometimes a rabbit is marketed as a 4H rabbit because it is the wrong variety (a DQ) or has a significant fault, or just is poor quality compared to the standards of that breed.

And Maybe you’re going to use that rabbit specifically for showmanship (you are shopping for personality) or for hopping and agility (you are shopping for athleticism); in both cases I always recommend to find a rabbit who’s personality meshes with those activities.

But if you want to compete in the breed classes as well, please shop from qualified breeders and plan on investing in the best stock you can afford.

And If you plan on breeding, that’s entirely different. A good brood doe may not be showable (for many reasons), but an investment in one is priceless for a breeding project.

A Bitter sweet end to County Fair. Unexpected Last year in 4-H but we were all ready for it.

End of summer and After fair chores are getting done.

Culls donated to the Raptor Rescue, feed cups and water bottles cleaned.

AVAILABLE RABBITS: We have four more Holland Lops ready now and a mom with her babies.

I’d consider selling the mom with her litter—they are just over two weeks old if anyone is interested for local pick up only within the next week. Mom is a chinchilla from Reeder’s Farmhouse Rabbitry (but she is out of a buck from Bloink’s Blessed Bunnies and also comes from Critter Co*op Lines). She was bred to Legino’s Knox (broken tort). 2️⃣5️⃣0️⃣ for all five. Inquire if interested. This offer is not available once the kits are weaned.

So I’m both really bummed, but also delighted. At county fair, this doe won Best In Show. She’s still a junior and underdeveloped, but shows lots of potential. But I chose to sell her earlier this summer to another youth, because we’re eventually getting out of Holland Lops, and my son didn’t need to hog all
of the keepers. Delighted that I helped set another youth up with the start of a great breeding project. But this is my son’s last year showing rabbits (he announced that today) and it would have been a great way to end his rabbit career.
