🐩🐩 You want me to fetch WHAT?! 😂
Anira and Luna already know how to fetch, but we're making things a little more interesting!
Instead of retrieving the same familiar objects, we're having them practice with all kinds of crazy, unusual items.
This is advanced fetch training, and it's a skill that takes quite a bit of time to develop.
Every dog learns at a different pace. Some catch on quickly, while others need more time and practice.
The goal is to build their retrieval skills until they can fetch just about anything!
It's amazing how much training goes into what might look like a simple game of fetch!

🐩 What's in the jar? Luna knows before we do!
This is Luna working with blind control jars during scent detection training.
Here's how it works: We present containers without knowing what's inside. We only find out what each container holds after Luna gives her response.
You'll also notice that I don't say "Yes" after her response.
Instead, I use words such as "Thank you" or "Good job."
Why? Because there's a delay between Luna's response and our acknowledgment. If I use a marker word at that point, I'm marking what Luna is doing now—which may simply be looking at me—instead of the response she originally gave.
It's an important distinction when working with blind scent detection exercises!

🐩🍽️ Dinner is served… but first, Luna has a job to do!
Dining out can bring extra challenges when you're concerned about gluten.
Watch Luna, my gluten detection service dog, check a plate of nachos at Rainforest Cafe and give her trained All Clear response! 🐾
Her response is a step to the side, indicating she did not detect her trained target odor.
This is what we work toward with real-world scent detection training: helping dogs and handlers develop skills they can use in everyday situations.

🐩 Why am I making it harder for Luna to stand up? There's a good reason! ❤️
If you've been following Luna's videos, you know she was having trouble navigating stairs. She was tripping, missing steps, and sometimes falling.
Her veterinarian recommended exercises to help strengthen her hindquarters and improve her stability.
In today's video, Luna is doing sit-to-stand exercises with her front paws elevated on a platform.
This makes the movement more challenging and encourages her to engage her back legs as she stands.
It's another exercise we're incorporating into her routine to help build strength and improve her balance.
⚠️ Just a reminder: I'm not a canine physical therapist. These exercises were recommended by Luna's veterinarian for her specific needs. Please consult your veterinarian before trying exercises like these with your own dog.

🐩 Did you know something as simple as climbing stairs can become difficult for a dog?
Luna had been tripping, missing steps, and even falling on the stairs. It was concerning, so we spoke with her veterinarian.
One of the exercises recommended for her was working on a BOSU balance ball!
In this video, Luna practices sitting and standing on the BOSU. The unstable surface challenges her balance while helping strengthen her hindquarters.
These exercises are part of what we're doing to help her become steadier on her feet, and we've been seeing improvement. ❤️
⚠️ I want to be very clear: I am NOT a canine physical therapist. These exercises were recommended by Luna's veterinarian specifically for her needs. I'm sharing our experience, not recommending that others try them without veterinary guidance.
Luna works hard as my gluten detection service dog, and keeping her healthy and comfortable is just as important as maintaining her scent detection skills.

🐩 Oops! Even dog trainers make mistakes! 😂
Today, Anira and I were practicing sit, down, and stand when I accidentally told her to "Down" while she was already lying down!
Did Anira do anything wrong? Nope! That one was all on me!
Since she was already doing exactly what I asked, I went ahead and rewarded her anyway. ❤️
It's a great reminder that our dogs aren't always the ones making mistakes. Sometimes we're the ones who need to pay closer attention!
Positive reinforcement training is about clear communication, patience, and setting our dogs up for success.
These foundation skills are an important part of training a well-rounded service dog.

Ever wondered how we test an alpha-gal detection dog's accuracy without giving them clues?
In this 30-second video, Anira is practicing blind red meat and pork detection!
Blind testing is introduced after a dog already knows the target scents. Anira gives her response before I look inside the cup, helping prevent me from unintentionally influencing her answer.
You'll also notice I say "Thank you" instead of my usual "Yes" marker.
Normally, "Yes" marks the exact moment a dog gives a correct response. During blind testing, I can't confirm the answer until I check the cup, so "Thank you" acknowledges her response without telling her she was correct.
It's an important distinction in advanced scent detection training!

🐩 Even a well-trained gluten detection service dog needs practice!
In today's video, I'm sharing a little about my personal journey with Lyme disease, celiac disease, alpha-gal syndrome, arsenic toxicity, and mold toxicity, and how my dogs have helped me navigate food safety.
Luna also gives us a great teaching moment!
When presented with her first scent jar, she misses the indication. Rather than correcting or pressuring her, we do a simple hand touch to reset, present the jar again, and she responds correctly.
This is exactly why I emphasize ongoing training.
Scent detection skills need to be maintained. Practicing every couple of days helps keep those skills sharp, and even after completing a training program, continued practice is essential.
Gluten detection service dogs can provide an additional layer of protection, but they aren't infallible or a replacement for other food safety precautions.
