Life doesn’t always go according to plan, and our dogs need the skills to adapt! 💛

Teaching your dog to move their body in different ways helps build flexibility, coordination, and body awareness that carry over into everyday life.

Games like backing up, pivoting on a low platform, and walking on uneven or textured surfaces encourage your dog to problem-solve, adjust their movements, and become more confident navigating new situations.

And there’s a physical bonus, too! These exercises engage the core and rear chain muscles, helping build strength, balance, and stability that support healthy movement and may help reduce injury risk.

Because we’re not just teaching party tricks. We’re helping our dogs become more adaptable, confident companions who are ready for whatever life throws their way.

🍂 If you have a chaotic dog who barks or lunges at every distraction...

Try giving their brain something else to focus on: sniffing!

And fall gives us the perfect opportunity to turn a pile of leaves into a fun Find It game. 🍁

Here’s how to play:

🍂 Toss a treat into a pile of leaves
🍂 Cue “Find It!” or “Search!”
🍂 Let your dog use their nose to sniff it out
🍂 Repeat and let them enjoy the process!

Sniffing is a great decompression activity to add to your walks. It gives your dog an opportunity to slow down, gather information, use their brain, and engage in a natural behavior they love.

You don't always need to keep moving to have a productive walk. Sometimes, stopping to sniff is exactly what your dog needs.

Earn your dog’s title, celebrate their hard work with a rosette, and get personalized feedback to help level up their tricks! 🏆💛

Intermediate: 12 tricks,
Advanced: 5 tricks,
Expert: 5 tricks

I get it; it can be tough when you have a reactive dog and don’t get to attend the fall, dog-friendly events in your community. If you can relate to this my advice to you is to bring the fall fun into your backyard! Nothing is stopping you! 🎃🍂

Tricks training is a great way to build your dog’s confidence, get out their excess energy, and meet their needs with enrichment.

When we fill our dog’s cups we often see a reduction in the “undesirable” or frustrating behaviors we find in our dogs, which is why I love tricks training! Also it is a great way to grow your bond with your dog.

🎃For a fall enrichment idea with a tricks training twist, grab a pumpkin from your local pumpkin patch and have them place two paws on it.

Not only will this trick get you a super cute IG-worthy photo, it is a great way to teach your dog balance and build up their confidence. What tricks are you currently working on with your dog? Share with me in the comments! 👇

🙌Two Paws Up Tutorial:

Prepare: Gather treats, find a quiet space, and use a sturdy, low object like a stool.

Get Attention: Hold a treat to capture your dog’s focus.

Lure to Object: Guide your dog’s nose toward the object, encouraging them to place both front paws on it.

Add Cue: Once they reliably place paws, introduce the cue “Two Paws Up” and gradually reduce treat luring.

Practice: Build confidence by increasing time on the object and practicing in different environments.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth at Capital Area Humane Society’s Walk For The Animals! It was a wonderful event and we enjoyed seeing all of our friends (humans and pups!).

A special thank you to Smack Pet Food for their generous donation of Smack Dog Food Samples. They were a huge hit and it was wonderful sharing what we use for training with our clients at the event.

🎃 Should I dress my dog in a Halloween costume?

The answer? It depends on your dog! 💛

Some dogs are completely unbothered by costumes and may happily strut their stuff. Others may find wearing something unfamiliar uncomfortable or stressful.

Before dressing your dog up, here are a few things to consider:

✨ Does your dog enjoy wearing clothing?
✨ Can they move comfortably and naturally?
✨ Are they showing signs of stress or discomfort?
✨ Would a simple bandana or festive collar be a better option?

Remember: Your dog doesn’t have to wear a costume to participate in the fun.

The goal is to make Halloween enjoyable for both ends of the leash.
