🌿 Borage: The Garden Gift That Keeps on Giving 🌿

If I could recommend one plant for every garden, it would be borage.

This beautiful herb is a true powerhouse in the garden. Its bright blue, star-shaped flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators, helping increase pollination throughout your garden. Borage also draws in beneficial insects that help keep pests in check, making it a great companion plant for tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, and more.

One of my favorite things about borage? Once you plant it, you'll likely never have to plant it again. Borage readily self-seeds, meaning it drops seeds and returns year after year with very little effort from you. It's one of those plants that just keeps giving.

Not only is it beautiful and useful, but the flowers are edible too! They make a lovely addition to salads, drinks, and summer desserts.

For a plant that supports pollinators, improves biodiversity, and practically plants itself, borage earns a permanent spot in my garden every year.

One of my favorite parts of homesteading has nothing to do with harvesting food or checking things off my to-do list.

It's my morning walk through the homestead.

Before the day gets busy, I take a few moments to wander through the garden and just be present. The dew-covered grass on my bare feet, the cool morning air, the birds singing from the trees, and the familiar morning squawks from my hens remind me to slow down and breathe.

These quiet moments help keep me grounded. They give me space to clear my mind, reconnect with nature, and prepare myself for whatever the day brings. Homesteading has taught me that productivity isn't just about what we grow,it's also about creating a life that nourishes our mental health.

This little quarter-acre homestead is my sanctuary. Every morning it reminds me that healing, joy, and peace can be found right where we are.

Juneteenth is more than a celebration of freedom—it's a reminder of resilience, self-determination, and the deep agricultural knowledge our ancestors carried with them.

After emancipation, many formerly enslaved people sought land, grew their own food, raised livestock, and built communities rooted in self-sufficiency. Gardening, farming, seed saving, food preservation, and caring for the land became acts of survival and liberation.

Today, homesteading continues that legacy.

Every tomato planted, every herb harvested, every egg collected, and every seed saved is a step toward food sovereignty and reclaiming our relationship with the land. For many Black homesteaders, growing food isn't just a hobby—it's a way of honoring our ancestors and creating a future where our communities have access to fresh, healthy food.

This Juneteenth, I reflect on the generations before us who dreamed of freedom and the opportunity to cultivate their own land. Their strength inspires the work we do today at 1991greenery Homestead.

Freedom and food have always been connected. 🌻

Don't Forget the Pollinators!

When planning your garden, it's easy to focus on what you're growing for yourself,but don't forget to plant for the pollinators too!

Bees, butterflies, moths, beetles, and other beneficial insects play a huge role in helping our gardens thrive. Many of the fruits and vegetables we love depend on pollinators to produce a harvest.

Adding native plants, flowering perennials, and annual flowers throughout your garden creates food and habitat for these hardworking helpers. Native plants are especially important because they have evolved alongside local pollinators and provide the nectar, pollen, and shelter they need to survive.

Some of my favorite pollinator-friendly plants include:

Mikayla Brunson is 18 years old and lives in Holt, Michigan. She enjoys learning about and working with plants, and in her free time she loves reading, crocheting, and spending time with friends.

Mikayla was inspired to apply for this internship because she wants to expand her knowledge of plants and gain more hands-on experience working with them. Gardening has always been a passion of hers, and she is excited for the opportunity to continue growing that passion. One of her favorite aspects of gardening is seeing the results of the hard work and care that go into growing plants.

Gardening has been a part of Mikayla’s life for as long as she can remember. She grew up gardening with her family and has many find memories of working alongside her dad,watering plants, picking tomatoes, and eating fresh watermelon straight from the garden. These experiences helped cultivate her love for gardening and shaped her appreciation for growing food. I want to send a huge thank you to everyone who came out yesterday to pick up transplants and support 1991greenery Homestead. The turnout was incredible, and I am so grateful for each and every one of you.

Thank you to everyone who left donations for the homestead. Your generosity helps me continue growing food, teaching small-space homesteading, and creating opportunities for our community to learn and grow together.

Because y'all completely wiped your girl out, today's plant sale is officially canceled!
There simply aren't enough plants left to hold a full second day of sales.

My recent trip to Rwanda and Zimbabwe has reignited something deep within me as an urban farmer.

Seeing how agriculture is woven into everyday life was truly inspiring. In both countries, growing food isn't viewed as a hobby, it's a necessity, a skill, and something that is deeply valued by communities. Everywhere I looked, people were using every inch of available space to grow food. Banana trees, cassava, beans, corn, leafy greens, fruit trees, and medicinal plants were integrated into homes, neighborhoods, and landscapes with intention and purpose.

What struck me most was the simplicity. Many farmers were producing incredible yields with minimal resources, relying on practical techniques, intercropping, community knowledge, and generations of agricultural wisdom. The beauty wasn't in expensive infrastructure or fancy equipment,it was in the efficient use of space, strong community connections, and a commitment to feeding families.

As someone who homesteads on just one-tenth of an acre, this experience put a fire in me. It reminded me that food production doesn't require vast amounts of land. It requires creativity, knowledge, and a willingness to use what you have. The community farming models, the resourcefulness, and the respect for agriculture have inspired me to dream bigger, teach more, and continue helping others see the potential in their own backyards.

Rwanda and Zimbabwe reminded me why I started this journey in the first place: to show that every space has the potential to grow something meaningful.
