Everywhere you look, people are growing food in every inch of space they have. Banana trees towering over beans, cassava growing beside corn, taro root tucked into the landscape, guava and avocado trees providing shade and food all at once.

They truly understand intercropping and using the land with intention. Nothing is wasted. Every space has purpose, beauty, and abundance. It’s a reminder that you don’t need acres to grow food and nourish your family ,you just need creativity, care, and connection to the land.

Seeing this has reminded me that small-space homesteading is powerful. Grow what you can, where you can. 🌿

WHY THE COLD COMPOST METHOD WORKS IN SMALL SPACES...

Small-space homesteading teaches you to work smarter, not bigger

One thing that has worked really well for me is cold composting. I don’t have endless space for giant compost systems, so I simply build a pile and feed it slowly over time. All summer long I add chicken p**p, bedding from my coop, weeds, old plants, leaves, and garden scraps from the homestead.

✨ How to Cold Compost:
β€’ Start a pile or bin in a small corner
β€’ Add browns like leaves, shredded cardboard, or coop bedding
β€’ Add greens like weeds, kitchen scraps, and fresh plant material
β€’ Keep layering throughout the season
β€’ Let nature break it down over time
I let nature do the work.

By the next growing season, I’m left with beautiful rich compost that goes right back into my garden beds, around my fruit trees, and into my refreshed soil and pots.
Cold composting may take longer, but it’s low maintenance, simple, beginner friendly, and perfect for small spaces. You don’t need acres of land to create healthy soil and grow abundant food. Start where you are and use what you have

Refreshing your potting soil is one of the best ways to give your plants a fresh start for the growing season.

Before planting, I like to bring life back into my old soil by mixing in:
πŸ‚ Dried leaves for organic matter
🌿 Compost for nutrients and healthy microbes
πŸ’ͺ Organic fertilizer for steady growth
🦴 Bone meal to support strong roots and blooms

Healthy soil = healthy plants. You don’t always need brand new soil β€” sometimes your plants just need the soil loved on a little more.

Small steps like this make a huge difference in your garden’s success all season long.

GROW UP, NOT OUT...
Use vertical space with trellises, shelves, hanging baskets, and wall planters. Cucumbers, peas, beans, and herbs thrive upward, helping you grow more in less room.
