We look forward to meeting you! Riverside Veterinary Hospital was founded in 1978 with a purpose to provide the best possible care to pets and piece of mind to their owners. Dr. Charles Harris, who purchased the hospital in 1979 and is a graduate of Auburn University, and a current member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) as well as the Alabama Veterinary Medical Association (Alabama VMA) and East Alabama Veterinary Medical Association (East Alabama VMA). His associates are Dr. Kerri Teague, Dr. Shani McCrillis, and Dr. Cindy Rogers. We have always striven to build and maintain a reputation for excellence and satisfaction amongst our customers, and are extremely proud of the results. 🌪️ HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS: PROTECT YOUR FAMILY & YOUR ANIMALS! 🐾

With Hurricane Isaias bringing the threat of heavy rain, damaging winds, and potential flooding to our area, now is the time to prepare! Don’t wait until the storm arrives to make a plan. Your safety and the safety of your animals depend on preparing early.

🐴 Protect Your Livestock: Due to the risk of flooding, ALL outdoor livestock must be moved to higher ground before the storm arrives. Ensure they have access to safe shelter, clean water, and adequate food.

🐶 Bring Companion Animals Indoors: ALL companion animals should be moved indoors to protect them from dangerous winds, heavy rain, and flooding. Do not leave pets tied up or outside during the storm.

🐾 Prepare an Emergency Kit: Have food, water, medications, medical records, leashes, carriers, litter, and other essential supplies ready for every animal in your care. Keep identification tags current and have recent photos available in case you become separated.

📢 Stay Informed & Have a Plan: ✅ Monitor local weather forecasts and emergency alerts. ✅ Know your evacuation routes and identify a safe place for your family and animals. ✅ Make arrangements early—waiting until the last minute can put both people and animals at risk.

⚠️ ALABAMA DOG OWNERS: AS OF TODAY, BEAU’S LAW IS OFFICIALLY IN EFFECT. ⚠️

Know the law: Beau's Law (Alabama SB 361) is a statewide criminal law effective TODAY, October 1, 2026.

If you keep a dog outdoors, the rules have changed. Our local Sheriff’s Departments, City Police, and Animal Enforcement are no longer just leaving warnings. They now have the full state authority to investigate, issue criminal charges, and seize dogs in immediate danger.

🚨 WHAT IS NOW ILLEGAL IN ALABAMA:
• ❌ Logging Chains: You cannot use heavy logging chains to tie up a dog.
• ❌ Fixed Chaining: You cannot chain a dog to a tree, post, or stationary stake.
• ❌ Choke/Pinch Collars: These are strictly banned for tethering.
• ❌ Substandard Shelter: Dirt floors, zero ventilation, or boxes that don't protect from freezing cold, extreme heat, or wet weather are illegal.

✅ WHAT OUTDOOR DOGS MUST HAVE (SEE IMAGE):
• 🐾 A Trolley System: Tethering is ONLY legal if it uses a running trolley system with swivels to allow safe, unrestricted movement.
• 🐾 Proper Fit: A properly fitted flat collar or harness.
• 🐾 Continuous Access: Constant, uninterrupted access to clean water (potable), adequate food, and a proper weather-protected shelter.
• 🐾 Real Shelter Standards: Must have a solid floor, proper ventilation, bedding when it’s cold, and enough room for the dog to fully stand up, turn around, lie down, and extend its limbs.

💥 THE CONSEQUENCES ARE REAL:
Violating this law is a state misdemeanor. Local police and sheriff's deputies can and will lock people up:
• 1st Offense: Up to 3 months in jail + a $500 fine.
• 2nd Offense: Up to 6 months in jail + a $3,000 fine.
• 3rd Offense: Up to 1 year in jail + a $6,000 fine.
• PLUS: Owners will be forced by law to pay for the boarding and vet bills if their dog is seized.

September 29th is National Coffee Day, and while we may love starting our morning with a warm or iced cup of coffee, our furry friends should never get a sip! 🚫🐶🐱

☕ Coffee and caffeine can be dangerous for pets. Caffeine is toxic to both dogs and cats and can cause serious problems, including:

⚠️ Restlessness or hyperactivity
⚠️ Vomiting or diarrhea
⚠️ Rapid heartbeat
⚠️ Tremors or seizures
⚠️ In severe cases, caffeine poisoning can be life-threatening

And remember—it’s not just the coffee in your mug! Coffee grounds, beans, tea, energy drinks, caffeine pills, and other caffeinated products can also be dangerous.

🐾 Keep your cup—and your coffee supplies—out of paw's reach! If your pet accidentally consumes coffee or another caffeinated product, contact us or an emergency veterinary hospital right away. The sooner a pet is evaluated, the better!

So go ahead and enjoy that morning cup. Sip, smile, and celebrate… just make sure your four-legged coffee buddy sticks to their own treats! 🐾❤️
