❓ Why Does My Pet Need An Exam Before We Can Refill Their Medication❓

📞We’ve received many calls just this morning from clients requesting medication refills for pets who haven’t been seen by a veterinarian recently. We completely understand that keeping up with medications can be stressful and inconvenient, but there is an important reason we cannot simply refill medications without seeing your pet.

👩‍⚕️ Veterinarians must have a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR) in order to prescribe medications. This means our doctors need to have recently examined your pet and have enough current information about their health to safely prescribe or continue a medication.

This isn’t just a Riverside Veterinary Hospital rule — federal law(Section 503(f) of the FD&C Act) and veterinary prescribing regulations require veterinarians to have a valid VCPR when prescribing medications. Which means we cannot legally dispense or authorize certain medications for a patient we have not recently examined.

This includes:
🦟Prescription heartworm prevention
💉Prescription flea and tick prevention
💊Antibiotics
🩺Controlled substances
🩹Pain medicaton/Anti-inflammatories
And more...

But there’s an even more important reason for this requirement: your pet’s health can change. ❤️

A medication that was appropriate months ago may no longer be the right choice or dose today. Regular examinations allow our veterinarians to:
🐶 Monitor your pet’s overall health
🐱 Check whether medications are still appropriate
💊 Adjust dosages when needed
🩺 Look for changes or underlying problems
❤️ Catch potential issues before they become bigger problems

That’s why yearly wellness exams are so important, even when your pet seems perfectly healthy! We know life gets busy, and we’re happy to help you stay on track with your pet’s preventative care.

Thank you for understanding that these requirements are in place to protect your pet and ensure we are providing them with the safest, most appropriate care possible. ❤️

🐾 September is Animal Pain Awareness Month 🐾

Our pets can’t tell us when something hurts, so it’s up to us to recognize the signs. ❤️

Animals are notoriously good at hiding pain. Changes like limping, sleeping more, decreased appetite, difficulty getting up, hiding, excessively licking a particular area, panting, or simply acting “not quite themselves” can all be signs that something is wrong and they are in pain.

Just because they aren’t actively crying or whining doesn’t mean they aren’t hurting. 🐶🐱

This month, take a few extra minutes to pay attention to your furry family members. If you notice changes in their behavior or mobility, don’t ignore them—pain is not a normal part of aging, and help is available.

Let’s be their voice and make sure they don’t suffer in silence. 🐾💙

💡Trivia Time ANSWER💡

We are pleasantly shell shocked at all the wonderful answers! Ya'll are turtle-ly awesome! If you guessed:

A)50

You are correct!!✅

🐢A turtle’s shell is an integral part of its skeleton, composed of bony plates and cartilage that are permanently fused to the spine and ribs, making it impossible for the turtle to leave its shell. The exact number of bones can vary by species and age, but most turtles have approximately 50–60 bony plates in the shell alone!!

🐢When considering the entire skeleton, including the skull, limbs, and vertebrae, a turtle may have around 280 bones or more depending on its type and size.

Thank you for participating in our Trivia Time!! 👀Keep an eye out for our upcoming one next week and put your animal knowledge to the test!

Say hello Duke and Rosebud!🐕🌹

🐾🌟 PATIENT SPOTLIGHT🌟🐾

Say hello to Milo! 😻💙 This handsome little guy is a 16-week-old Grey Maine C**n who is weighing in at a whopping 5.6 lbs!

Milo may be growing into those big, well-known Mainecoon paws, but he’s still very much a loving little mama’s boy! 🥰 His favorite place to be? Right by her side! ❤️🐾

With his fluffy grey coat, sweet personality, and overflowing love for his mom, it’s safe to say Milo completely stole our hearts! 🐱💕

Welcome to the RVH family, Milo! 💙

🌈 Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day 🌈

Today, we remember the beloved pets who crossed the Rainbow Bridge and forever left pawprints on our hearts. 🐾

❤️They may no longer be by our side, but the love, memories, cuddles, and unconditional companionship they gave us will never fade. These losses leave a hole in our hearts that can never quite be filled. We often miss their faces, their little or BIG personalities, the sound of their paws around the house, and simply having them beside us.

Today, of all days, we stop and take the time to remember all the sweet souls we've come across, who we've loved deeply, cherished completely, and will never be forget. Until we meet again, run free, sweet babies. You were loved more than words could ever say.🌈 ❤️🐶🐱🐰🐴

💔Our office is very saddened with the loss of Dolly Parton. While the world knows her as a country music legend, Dolly’s massive heart extended far beyond the stage.. especially when it came to animals.

🐾Her lifelong advocacy and legacy as a protector of living creatures is a beautiful reflection of who she was.

Her light will be missed but her legacy will continue on. ❤️✨

Rest in Peace Miss Dolly Parton
