Quick Genetic Update on Oakley 🐾9/23/26
To put it simply: Oakley tested as a "carrier" for the gene we were testing.
What that means: He only has one copy of the mutated gene, not two. Because the second gene is healthy, it acts as a backup, meaning he tested negative for the actual genetic disease itself.
The "dormant" part: Having one gene usually means it stays inactive/dormant and won't cause the full-blown illness, though it can't be ruled out 100%.
Bottom line: The test mostly rules out that specific genetic condition, which is good news! However, because he is still having symptoms, his neurologist recommends an MRI to look for physical or structural causes we can treat.
Please continue to say prayers. I am waiting on an estimate from the doctor's office to proceed.
Update 9/2/26: Unfortunately, the neurology team suspects Oakley may have NCL (Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis), a rare genetic disease with no cure. We are sending off genetic testing to see if he carries the two specific gene mutations associated with this condition.
Depending on what those results show, our next step may be an MRI to help rule out any treatable conditions.
This isn't the news we were hoping for, but we are taking it one step at a time to get sweet Oakley the answers he deserves. Please keep sending prayers and positive thoughts his way! 🙏🐾
Meet sweet Oakley 🐾❤️
We’re sharing a special prayer request for this boy today. Oakley was at Upstate Veterinary Specialists receiving a full neurological evaluation to help us figure out what’s behind some symptoms we’ve been noticing over the past few months.
Unfortunately, the neurology team suspects he may have NCL (Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis), a rare genetic condition without a cure. We’ve sent off DNA for genetic testing to check for the two known mutations associated with it. Depending on those results, our next step will likely be an MRI to rule out any treatable causes.
This wasn't the news we were hoping for, but we’re taking it one day at a time to get Oakley the answers and care he deserves. Please wrap this precious boy in love, light, and prayers today! We’ll keep everyone updated as we learn more. 🙏✨
