‘Happy National Greyhound Day!’🐾

Bob was such a good boy for his yearly wellness exam. He’s was nervous, but he did very well and even accepted treats afterwards. Bob’s owner adopted him from Nittany Greyhounds. They are a rescue that is dedicated to raising awareness for retired racing greyhounds and placing these dog’s into loving homes.❤️
A funny thing about Bob is that he likes to sleep on his back with his legs in the air.

🐱June is 'Adopt a Shelter Cat Month.' In honor of shelter cats everywhere, here are some tips for helping your shelter cat settle into their new home.🐱

🐾Create a safe space: Easy access to food, water, litter, and calm/quiet sleeping areas are a must for your new kitty.

🐾Be patient: In most cases, it can take time for a shelter cat to 'come out of their shell,' use the litter box properly, and feel completely comfortable in their new home, especially if they came from a bad situation. Your patience as your new furbaby is given time to settle in is so important and will be so worth it as you bond with your pet.

🐾Develop a routine that works for you both: Although cats are very adaptable creatures, they still need time to learn your schedule and comings and goings, feeding times, etc.

🐾Give them space: Let them come to you as they open up. Give them alone time to explore their new home.

🐾Get to know them: What is your new cat's favorite toy? Does she love or hate belly rubs? Is she a foodie or more of a picky eater?

❤️🐈‍⬛Share a picture of your 'former' shelter cat in the comments, and the thing you love most about them.🐈❤️

Dogs and cats are much more vulnerable to the heat than we are because they cannot sweat through their skin to regulate body temperature the way we do. They rely on panting and can only release a very small amount of sweat through their paw pads. Ways to keep your pet safe this summer include:
-Never leave your pet in a hot car! Yesterday, we shared a chart that showed how hot it gets inside of a car - even with the windows cracked. Even 10 minutes can be fatal.
-Provide plenty of fresh, cool water. Add ice cubes to keep the water even cooler.
-Provide plenty of shady areas for your pet outside.
-Stay inside in the air conditioning as much as possible.
-Avoid midday walks. (Walks early in the morning or late at night when the sun is not at its brightest are ideal. Hot pavement can burn your pet's paw pads). Keep midday walks to a minimum to protect your pet from overheating.
-Know the signs of heatstroke: excessive panting and drooling, rapid heart rate, collapse, with or without vomiting and diarrhea.
*If you are noticing any of these signs, call us or an emergency veterinary hospital for help.
The other thing to keep in mind is that the brachycephalic breeds like bulldogs, boxers, pugs, etc. have an even more difficult time in the heat due to their 'smushed' faces (which restrict air flow, making it harder for them to pant and cool down).
Remember these tips this summer to keep your pets safe!

This chart shows the temperature inside your car after a certain period of time, even with the windows cracked. Within minutes, the temperature can become hot enough to be dangerous and even deadly if your pet is left in the vehicle. *A reminder to never leave your pet in a hot car, even if it’s only for a few minutes.

🐾Yorkie brothers, 🩶Romeo (gray hoodie) and 🖤Rolo (black hoodie) are 5 years old and have been coming to Happy Tails since they were pups. Maddison (vet assistant) enjoyed seeing these two the other week. They did so well for their Cytopoint injections and were just too cute in their jean jackets not to share!🐾

🐈‍⬛🐾🐱Here are some simple ways to support your senior kitty and things to look out for and monitor as they age.🐈❤️⭐️

🐾Provide a stable, predictable routine and environment for your cat
🐾Support your cat with their grooming care by gently brushing or cleaning them, especially areas that may be harder for them to reach as they age.
🐾Add steps or ramps where applicable if your cat has trouble getting to their favorite sleep or resting areas like the high bed for example.
🐾Provide a clean, spacious litter box with low sides to make it easier for your kitty to get in and out.
❤️Give your cat gentle, affectionate interaction on their terms.

⭐️Twice yearly vet visits are recommended for senior cats due to how quickly changes can happen and how good cats are at hiding certain issues.
🔶Be sure to monitor your cat's bathroom habits and note any changes. Urinating a lot more than normal and/or not having regular bowel movements and/or accidents outside of the litter box.
🔶Keep an eye on your cat's mobility. Watch for limping, stiffness upon rising, trouble jumping, vocalizing when moving a certain way, new irritability, decreased grooming, difficulty getting in and out of the litter box.
🔶Changes in appetite (whether increased or decreased), excessive thirst, and/or weight loss are more things to be aware of.
🟧These are all things to look out for that warrant a visit to your vet for a check up and possible diagnostics.

💜🐶At 9 weeks old and 17 pounds when this photo was taken, Bernese Mountain Dog puppy, CHARLIE, enjoyed being snuggled by Hannah (CVT).🐾 She won’t be able to be held like a baby for much longer as she’s going to be much bigger when she’s full grown!😆🐾 This ‘teddy bear’ was such a good girl for her vaccines and nail trim. We enjoyed seeing her, and she loved all the attention.🐶💜
