As winter approaches, our senior horses deserve to feel their best! 🦷❄️

Their teeth play a crucial role in maintaining their overall health, especially when hay becomes their main source of forage. Efficient chewing is essential for:

• Maintaining body condition and topline
• Generating warmth through constant forage intake
• Supporting healthy digestion and stomach comfort

When senior horses' teeth wear down or loosen, they may:
• Drop hay or quidding more frequently
• Struggle to maintain weight
• Experience discomfort or secondary digestive issues

A dental check before winter can make all the difference, restoring comfort and improving function. Let's keep our senior horses eating happily, staying warm, and thriving through the colder months 🤍🐴

Another great visit to .north yesterday, enjoying the chance to work with some familiar horses as well as meeting some residents newer to the herd. Amy, Eli, Rugar, Stella, and April (whose picture is missing above) along with others, have undergone rehabilitation and recovery, getting ready to find their next new home. The details and abilities about each of these fabulous equines can be found on their website at neernorth.org. Always a pleasure to take part in helping these horses feel their best. I look forward to seeing where their journeys take them next!

Happy Tech Week!! I have had the good fortune to work with many veterinary technicians/ assistants thus far in my career and I thank each and every one of them for their hard work, dedication, their PATIENCE 😅 , for keeping me safe and and sticking it out with me even on the bad days! This year, joined the practice as an assistant on the road as well as behind the scenes, helping with social media, education and communication for the practice! She is one hard working lady and I am so grateful for all she has done to keep NEVW moving in the right direction! ❤️

Last week’s dentals were extra special—we worked on Colonial Spanish horses, one of the most endangered horse breeds in the world. 🐴✨

They’re celebrated for their smooth gaits, athleticism, and the deep, almost “dog-like” bond they form with people. Their unique build—short-coupled with a narrow chest and the distinctive “rafter hip”—gives them the natural ability to sit, collect, and move with elegance that sets them apart from modern breeds.

Tracing back to the Spanish conquistadors who first brought them to the Americas, Colonial Spanish horses carry a living history. With strains like Choctaw, Corolla, and Grand Canyon, and their striking variety of colors, each one preserves a rare and irreplaceable piece of equine heritage.

While it was a privilege to support such a rare breed, we’re here to help horses of every type stay healthy, comfortable, and performing at their best. 💫

I had the pleasure of meeting our new patient Frankie at Hillside Meadows Equestrian Center last week 🐴💙

This super sweet 4-year-old is just finishing getting his adult teeth, with his third molars starting to come in. At this age, regular oral exams every 6 months are so important to make sure teeth are developing properly, check for wolf teeth, and smooth out sharp enamel points that young horses often have.

Welcome to the practice, Frankie — can’t wait to see you again! ✨

It’s National Farrier Week!

Radiographs play a key role in advanced hoof care. They give us and your farrier a detailed look at internal structures, helping guide trimming, shoeing, and overall balance for long-term soundness.

The veterinarian–farrier partnership is essential to keeping horses comfortable, athletic, and healthy. When we combine knowledge and experience, horses benefit.

This week, we’re proud to recognize the farriers who make that possible. Thank you for the work you do.

In the midst of so much loss and human sadness surrounding the flood disaster in central Texas, the separation from pets left behind can add to the grief and stress of those affected. Rescue organizations are stepping in to save and care for animals in need. Additionally, rescue missions on horseback are hoping to reach areas difficult to do so by other means. If so inclined, donations to the following trusted organizations may offer support during this horrific time.
