📍 Lancaster County Animal Shelter, SC

Incredibly handsome, great on a leash, and he seems to be potty trained, too! But if you ask Rango what his favorite thing in the world is, the answer is easy: other dogs. This big baby absolutely lights up around canine friends and would happily spend his days playing, romping, and making new buddies.

With his sweet personality, goofy charm, and movie-star good looks, we’re not sure how he’s still waiting. Rango is ready to trade shelter life for a home of his own. Could that home be yours?

We know we sound like a broken record.

Every week, every day, sometimes every hour, we’re saying the same thing: the shelter is full. But the reality is that it isn’t getting better.

Tonight, we have negative kennel space. There are more dogs coming in than there are places for them to go. We wish we had a different update to share. We wish we didn’t have to keep sounding the alarm.

But these dogs need us to keep screaming it from the rooftops.

They need adopters. They need fosters. They need rescues. They need shares. They need people willing to take a chance on them before it’s too late.

The dogs filling these kennels are not numbers. They are loving, deserving souls who have nowhere else to go. We cannot create space out of thin air. The only way forward is through your help.

Please share. Please foster. Please adopt. Please help us keep fighting for them.

The shelter is beyond full, and the odds are growing heavier by the day.

So last week was tough. Every single day staff and volunteers fought like crazy for each kennel we could get. And it ended up ok. But it also meant that this week is yet another uphill battle. So again. We ask to keep sharing our posts. Network out dogs. Every single bit helps !

"No rescue wants this one."

"Why isn't a rescue stepping up?"

These are two of the most common phrases we see daily and they are also two of the most damaging.

The reality is that most rescues do want to help. They got into rescue because they care deeply about animals and want to save lives. But wanting to help and having the resources to help are not the same thing.

When a rescue says no, it is rarely because they don't care. It is usually because they are out of foster homes, out of funding, short on volunteers, or already caring for more animals than they can realistically support.

A responsible rescue knows its limits.Taking on more animals than they can safely care for doesn't solve the problem it creates another one.

Those of us involved in animal welfare see this crisis every day. We know fosters are scarce. We know veterinary costs continue to rise. We know shelters and rescues alike are overwhelmed. That's why it is especially important that we are careful with our words.

Saying "no rescue wants this one" unfairly suggests rescues don't care.

Asking "why isn't a rescue stepping up?" implies rescues are choosing not to help.

Neither statement reflects reality.

The reality is that rescues are doing everything they can with the resources they have. They are making heartbreaking decisions every day, often having to choose between cases because they simply cannot say yes to them all.

Instead of questioning why a rescue hasn't stepped up, ask what they need to be able to help. Foster. Adopt. Volunteer. Donate. Share their posts. Support their fundraisers.

Rescues don't need criticism for the animals they couldn't take. They need a community willing to help them save the ones they can.

The animal welfare crisis is bigger than any one shelter or rescue can solve alone. We need less blame, more understanding, and a lot more people willing to be part of the solution.

Captain is only 2 years old and somehow already has the sweetest soul. And yes… his ears really are always this cute 🥹

Captain came to us as part of an abandonment case alongside 4 other pups, but you’d never know it from the way he still trusts and loves so deeply. He’s a quiet, easygoing boy who walks beautifully on leash, seems potty trained, and is just an all around amazing fella to be around.

The kind of dog who doesn’t ask for much — just a safe home, kind people, and a chance to finally belong. 🤍
