Pro tip: tell a cat rescue you will dump your pet cat - the love of your life, your heart, your child, your everything - on the brutal and unforgiving streets of Lancaster city, and watch how quickly that rescue will connect with another rescue to make arrangements to take your cat, even though they already told you they are full and are unable to help with your surrender request. πŸ‘Œ

Everyone always claims to love their pets and would do absolutely anything for them, but their threats and actions behind the scenes tell a very different story.

Patrick's owner told social media they love him like their child, and wanted to make sure he landed safely with a "good fit", and even offered to consider taking him back if the fit wasn't good. They claimed Patrick's well-being was their top priority...
..they then turned around and told a rescue the following (direct quote):
"I’m gonna have to let him go outside at this point we live in the city because I’ve been trying to rehome them for two weeks now and can’t find him a good home."

Strangely, the same person who says to love Patrick like their own child and is putting his well-being before anything else was also ready to dump him outside, a place he has never been, would NOT even consider a local shelter because they assumed he would be kept in a cage all day.

We would much rather see cats in cages than left outside to fend for themselves and being on their own with finding food, finding water, finding shelter, staying safe from other animals, avoiding vehicles and cruel humans, etc. But maybe we have OUR priorities out of line? (Also, we're fairly certain local shelters do NOT keep cats caged 24/7, so there's that, too.)

But it's okay, at least for Patrick, because he is with us now.

We've got you, Patrick - us and the other rescue who reached out to us because they knew we could get to you quicker than they could. You don't know it, because all you know is you were handed off to a kind and gentle human who gave you gentle pets, treats, and a quiet place to land and decompress in. But WE know it - WE know what we saved you from.

Earlier I (Jenn) dropped everything, and ran out the door, hair dye and nail polish still drying, to help stabilize a critical kitten who showed up - tiny, undersized, starving, dehydrated, sick, and cold. The quicker FKS (Fading Kitten Syndrome) protocol is implemented, the better the chances for survival, which is why this little one could NOT wait for a shower and a top coat.

Jury's out on whether or not she survives. If she makes it through the night, she will have beaten the odds. We're prepared to wake up to sad news, but we will still hang onto that shred of hope that she will turn it around like the other exceptions (recent examples: Naga aka Eyeballs, and now Kepner aka Biggie Smolz) did.

Kitten season is brutal, especially for the innocent kittens who are born only to suffer and die.

Janus missed the memo that he's growing up (he's being neutered this month - he is now just about three months old!), and so he still insists on having a couple of bottles a day like the baby he believes he still is.

And if we don't move quickly enough to feed him, as you can see here, he will try to do it himself!

(Janus will be available for adoption after he is neutered! ❀️)

We've got peepers! πŸ‘€

We're at 36 hours of intensive care (frequent bottle feedings with breaks during them because of her breathing difficulties, fluids, a bit of FKS protocol (glucose/caloric supplements), warmth, and very frequent cleaning/rinsing/medicating of her eyes), and we're up 2.8 ounces, and we can now see BOTH eyes! πŸ’•

Sundance will be staying a bit longer so she has the time she needs to recover, grow, and learn how to be a sassy independent kitten, so we upgraded to a larger enclosure that has room for her, a bed, a stuffie to snuggle with, a heating pad, a toileting area, food dishes, AND room left over for exploration and playtime if she is feeling up to it.
(Please note that as with all of our orphaned baby kittens, Sundance will only be in her enclosure if the humans need to take care of other matters, work, or sleep. Janus and every bottle baby before him spent the majority of their first weeks with us: PHYSICALLY with us - in our arms, laps, tucked in our shirts, etc., - and Sundance will experience the same.
Just as human babies benefit and flourish from human touch and skin-to-skin contact, so do kittens with their mothers or surrogate human mothers. πŸ’— In fact, as this was being written, Sundance was in a lap taking a power nap!)

It's breaking our hearts to see Sundance immediately gravitate to the stuffed plush puppy (it was warm from the heating pad and has an artificial heartbeat inside it - thank you to the kind persons who donated a nice heating pad and a USB rechargeable heartbeat from our wishlist), but we know kittens are resilient, and as we continue to make her safe and comfortable, she will come to know and trust us, and seek us for affection and love. We aren't her mommy and can never replace her, but we'll do our best to be a good surrogate one.

It also hurts knowing Sundance didn't lose just her mother and siblings, but for the time being she can't really see, she can't really smell, and she can't even breathe without working extra hard - she must be so weary and afraid, so even though we are exhausted ourselves from the sleep deprivation incurred from taking care of her 'round the clock, it's worth it to at least give her enough peace of mind to be able to rest so her body can heal.

Thank you so, SO much to Jennifer M. for this collapsible travel crate. We don't think Sundance will mind that it's for doggos - as long as she has her luxurious little suite, she's good to go! We also want to thank the kind humans who donated bedding, stuffies, tiny toys for tiny kitties, a heating pad, and of course, food and KMR - Sundance is reaping the benefits of your collective kindness. 🌻

Amazon wishlist, if you'd like to support Sundance, the Thumbs 5 (update coming soon, as soon as the downpour of kittens lets up!), Janus, and the others who will surely stray our way:

Thank you to the person who donated this lovely pink travel pet carrier - we're not sure who you are (it was on our porch), but thank you! It was great to grab in an emergency.

Meet the emergency: πŸˆβ˜€οΈ Sundance, about four weeks old, 11.6 ounces, temporarily mostly blinded from a terrible eye infection (treatment started), snuffly and congested from a URI (treatment started), and in need of feeding and toileting support.

We don't know much about where she came from, but we're glad she landed safely, and as always, we are SO grateful to have emergency cat, kitten, AND baby kitten supplies to reach for at a moment's notice.

Thank you.

This is how itty-bitty Kepner really is! Her paw print (left) at 16 weeks of age is the same size as the paw print of a six weeker (right)!

This week Kepner is getting her second vaccine, and we hope she's ready and *WE'RE* ready to spay her over the summer. To put things into perspective, she is seven months old, and had she not been so sick, for so long, and so tiny, she would have received all three vaccines, rabies inoculation, AND she would have been spayed by the time she was four months old.

But that's okay - cat rescue, and animals' wellbeing and lives overall, aren't a sprint - they're a marathon, and slow and steady is the way

Some of you know we have a soft spot not just for young and struggling kittens, but Manx cats.

Bowser checks all the boxes and could really use some extra support! πŸ¦– πŸ’• πŸ™

(We contributed some baby food for him and his friends, but we're sure that didn't last long with those voracious Hungry-Hungry-Hippo appetites.)

The best gift the Thumbs 5 received today was a brand-new box!
(Gray also REALLY likes the little kitten-sized bed - he jumped right into it when we were showing him some new toys.)

Thank you so much, everyone. We've had quite a holiday weekend so we haven't been able to come back to social media as soon as we wanted to to give some updates. We will try to circle back tonight!

Thank you for all of the love and support - the Thumbs are quite literally eating it all up (Janus, Phoenix, and Kepner, too - the two smaller ones will be neutered and spayed in the coming month and adoptions will hopefully follow! Phoenix is ready to be adopted now - he's just waiting for an application or an open cage at PetSmart, whichever comes first. πŸ’•)

P.S. We have received several packages in the last two days, and NONE have had the typical order slips and notes indicating who sent the item(s) - so we don't know who sent what, and thus we have no way to thank you. Please let us know so we can thank you appropriately. 🌷

For the third time our rescue was offered crucial donations, but because we could not reply due to working second shift, the would-be donors changed their mind and gave their donations to other people. This last time, because we didn't respond until 6 hours later, we missed out. Someone changed their mind in gifting a rescue food because we could not answer within 6 hours on a Friday evening. This person cared to help out... until we couldn't jump when they said for us to jump.

The world doesn't revolve on a first-shift schedule, and it really sucks to lose out on donations our rescue needs to feed cats because we can't dance to someone else's tune.

The next time you decide to rescind a crucial donation like FOOD, because we were unable to answer you due to working at our jobs in order to keep the roof over our heads and over the heads of the cats we rescue, keep in mind you are choosing to withhold an offered gift of food to a rescue because they were unable to meet your unrealistic expectations because:

- someone has to be available to scrape cats off of the asphalt at 10: 00pm
- someone has to be available to rush a dying cat to the emergency vet at 1:00 in the morning.
- someone has to be available to bottle feed and stimulate kittens every 2 to 4 hours through the night.
- someone has to be available to rush a cat dying of a uterine infection to a TNR clinic at 7:30 in the morning so she won't die before she gets on the operating table.
- someone has to be available to give up sleep in order to support a crashing cat through the night so they can make it to see sunrise.

We are those someones, and yet we are routinely punished for operating on this kind of schedule in order to help more cats... But ultimately, or isn't we who are punished: it is the cats we won't be able to help because we don't have the necessary food to feed them who are the ones who reap the punishment for your impatience. πŸ’”

Again, our sincerest apologies for having to work a shift that you don't recognize the existence of.

Consider this a PSA that:
- if you contact us before 10:00 a.m., we might be sleeping;
- if you contact us between 2:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., we might be working.
- we often reply to messages later at night, and we do our best to respond to all messages within 24 hours.

If you are not able to work with these constraints for donations, please don't offer them to us, because we can't bend time and physics to appear when and where you expect us to based on your very unrealistic expectations - and it's cruel to think we are receiving the gift of food and other essentials, only to have them essentially dangled in front of us and then rescinded because we can't reply quickly enough or within the expected time frame. So if those are the conditions, we would rather not waste time and have our joy at receiving help so we can help MORE cats be dashed because you have no patience or understanding of a schedule other than your own.

We also strongly discourage any such people from offering to volunteer to foster kittens and cats. If you do not possess the understanding or patience to give a human more than 6 hours on a Friday evening to respond to a message, you certainly do not possess the understanding or patience to work with animals. We have serious concerns that such an arrangement would end up with animals being neglected or abused, since working with animals requires an extraordinary amount of patience and understanding. To offer to volunteer when you already demonstrated you have absolutely no patience is certainly an interesting choice, and needless to say it is an offer we will decline, as we must always put the animals' welfare first.
