☀️🪰 Summer Sores: When a Wound Isn't "Just a Wound" 🐴
Summer is here, and with it comes flies... and one of the more frustrating conditions we see this time of year: summer sores.
If your horse has a cut or scrape that just won't heal, keeps getting bigger, develops excessive proud flesh, or has yellowish tissue or drainage, it may not be a typical wound—it could be a summer sore.
Summer sores occur when flies deposit parasite larvae into wounds or moist areas of the body. Your horse's immune system reacts to the larvae, creating an inflamed, painful sore that often gets worse instead of better.
⚠️ Common signs include:
🩹 A wound that won't heal
📈 Increasing size or proud flesh
💛 Yellow or gritty tissue within the wound
🪰 Persistent drainage and irritation
😣 Excessive itching or rubbing
✅ The best defense is prevention!
• Use an effective fly control program.
• Clean and protect wounds immediately.
• Keep wounds covered whenever possible.
• Maintain a regular deworming schedule as recommended by your veterinarian.
⏰ Early treatment is key. Summer sores rarely resolve on their own and can become much more difficult to manage if left untreated.
If you notice a wound that's lingering or looks unusual, give us a call. We're here to help your horse stay healthy and comfortable all summer long! ☀️🐎

🦟🐴 Mosquito Awareness Week | Days 3 & 4 🦟🐴
Mosquitoes aren't just a nuisance—they can transmit serious diseases like West Nile Virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE).
⚠️ Know the Signs to
Watch for:
🔹 Stumbling or incoordination
🔹 Muscle tremors
🔹 Weakness
🔹 Difficulty standing
🔹 Behavioral changes
If your horse develops neurologic signs, contact your veterinarian right away.

How is the best way to protect against this? Vaccination!
💉 Vaccines Save Lives
The best protection against WNV and EEE is vaccination. These are considered core vaccines because of the severe and potentially life-threatening diseases they help prevent.
Not sure if your horse is up to date? Give us a call—we're happy to review your horse's vaccination schedule.
Protect your horse. Prevent disease. Stay mosquito aware.

🦟 **Mosquito Awareness Week – Day 2** 🦟

Mosquitoes are more than just a nuisance—they can pose a serious health risk to our horses. Today, we're focusing on one of the most important steps in mosquito control: **eliminating standing water around your farm.**

It only takes a small amount of stagnant water for mosquitoes to breed. Water troughs, buckets, old tires, clogged gutters, and low spots in pastures can quickly become mosquito hotspots.

By taking a few minutes each week to inspect and manage these areas, you can help reduce mosquito populations and lower the risk of mosquito-borne diseases such as **West Nile Virus (WNV)** and **Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE).**

Check out today's tips below and stay tuned tomorrow as we continue our Mosquito Awareness Week series with more ways to protect your horses this season! 🐴☀️🦟

🦟🐴 **Welcome to Mosquito Awareness Week!** 🐴🦟

This week, we'll be sharing daily tips and information to help keep your horses protected from mosquito-borne diseases and the health risks they can pose.

**Day 1: Why Mosquitoes Matter**

Mosquitoes are more than just an annoyance around the barn. They can transmit serious diseases such as **West Nile Virus (WNV)** and **Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE)** to horses. While these diseases are not common, they can cause severe neurologic illness and may be fatal.

The best defense is prevention through:
✔️ Annual vaccination
✔️ Good mosquito control practices
✔️ Eliminating standing water around your property

Is your horse up to date on their vaccines?

📅 Stay tuned tomorrow for **Day 2**, where we'll discuss one of the easiest ways to reduce mosquito populations around your farm.

🐴🚑 Important Update for Our Clients 🚑🐴

Effective immediately, we will be implementing a new policy regarding emergency calls. If an emergency visit is requested and a doctor has been dispatched, emergency call fees will apply even if the appointment is canceled while the doctor is en route.
Once a doctor leaves to respond to an emergency, time and resources have been committed to that case, and other patients may be delayed or unable to be seen. If your situation changes and you no longer require an emergency visit, please notify us as soon as possible. However, cancellations made after a doctor has been dispatched will still be subject to the applicable emergency charges.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we continue to provide prompt emergency care to our patients. ❤️🐎

In honor of Memorial Day we will be closed on Monday May 25th. Emergency services will still be available.

✨ TREATMENT SPOTLIGHT ✨

🐴 Spinal Manipulation (Similar to Chiropractic)
This therapy focuses on restoring proper motion and mobility within the joints of the body. Restrictions can contribute to stiffness, discomfort, reduced range of motion, and compensation patterns. By improving joint mobility, spinal manipulation can help horses move more comfortably and efficiently while supporting overall wellness and performance. ✨

🪡 Acupuncture Therapy
Acupuncture involves the placement of very fine needles at specific points throughout the body to help stimulate the nervous system, encourage circulation, reduce muscle tension, and promote relaxation. It can be used to support comfort, recovery, mobility, and overall balance within the body 💫

These therapies work beautifully together and can benefit horses of all ages, disciplines, and activity levels — from retirees and trail horses to lesson horses and competitors ❤️

Healthy movement. Better comfort. Happier horses. 🐎✨

💊✨ **Medicine Monday: Zygolide (Pergolide) for Equine Cushing’s (PPID)** ✨💊

Let’s kick off the week with a closer look at **Zygolide (pergolide)** — a key medication in managing **Equine Cushing’s Disease (PPID)** and helping horses feel their best!

🐴🌟 **What is Zygolide?**
Zygolide is a form of **pergolide**, the gold-standard treatment for horses diagnosed with PPID. It works by replacing dopamine in the brain — something PPID horses lack — helping to restore normal hormonal balance.

⚙️ **How does it work?**
In horses with PPID, the pituitary gland becomes overactive and produces excess hormones (like ACTH). Zygolide helps regulate this by:

* Mimicking dopamine
* Suppressing abnormal hormone production
* Bringing the endocrine system back into better balance

Consistency is key — daily dosing is critical for effective control.

💡 **Why it matters for your horse:**
✔️ Helps reduce abnormal hair coat (long, curly hair)
✔️ Supports energy levels and overall attitude
✔️ Improves immune function and healing
✔️ Supports long-term quality of life

🚨 **Quick Tips for Success:**
✔️ Give at the same time every day
✔️ Don’t skip doses — consistency = control
✔️ Monitor for appetite changes when starting (some horses may go off feed briefly)
✔️ Work with your veterinarian for routine bloodwork (ACTH monitoring)

🤝 Managing PPID is a team effort between you and your veterinary team — and understanding medications like Zygolide is a huge step toward keeping your horse happy and healthy.

Horses with SI (sacroiliac) pain may show:▫️ Bucking or tail swishing▫️ Trouble picking up leads▫️ Resistance under saddle▫️ Hind-end soreness▫️ Behavioral changes/performance decline
🎥 In this video, our doctors are performing ultrasound-guided SI injections to help reduce inflammation and improve comfort and performance.
✨ Accurate diagnosis and targeted treatment can make a huge difference for these horses!
