🪰 FLY SEASON IS HERE! 🪰

Flies aren’t just annoying—they can cause stress, skin irritation, summer sores, eye problems, and even contribute to the spread of disease in your horse.

🐴 Keep your horse comfortable with a good fly-control plan:
✨ Fly spray or wipes
✨ Fly masks, fly boots & sheets
✨ Regular manure removal
✨ Clean, dry water areas
✨ Fans in the barn
✨ Keep stalls and paddocks clean

A little prevention can go a long way toward keeping your horse happy, healthy, and swishing those tails for the right reasons! 🐴💨

👁️🐴 Why Do Foals Get Eye Ulcers So Often?

Foals are curious, playful, and still learning how to protect themselves—which is why eye injuries like corneal ulcers are so common.

🌱 They explore everything hay, grass, fences, even each other
👁️ Their blink reflexes aren’t fully developed yet
🐴 Play can get rough in the pasture
🌾 Dust, bedding, and debris can also irritate the eye

⚠️ Watch for signs:
• Squinting or keeping an eye closed
• Tearing or discharge
• Cloudy/blue eye
• Swollen eyelids
• Light sensitivity

⏰ Don’t wait! Eye ulcers can worsen quickly. Early treatment makes a big difference in protecting vision.

If you notice any of these signs, have your foal checked right away—most cases do very well when caught early.

One of our veterinary technicians has unfortunately been injured, outside of work, and will be taking on a different role while recovering. During this time, you may see some familiar faces helping in new positions, and our team may look a little different than usual.

📢 Attention USEF Competitors!

US Equestrian has announced important updates to its competition medication guidance for cetirizine (Zyrtec®) and methocarbamol (Robaxin®).

What's changed?
🐴 Cetirizine (Zyrtec®) is now a permitted substance and may be used during USEF-licensed competition.
🐴 Methocarbamol (Robaxin®) now has updated withdrawal recommendations:
• 12 hours if it is the only medication being administered and the horse is not receiving any dietary supplements.
• 24 hours if the horse is receiving any other medication or supplement in addition to methocarbamol.
