Temperature is dropping — here's your Chi cold weather checklist 🍂🐾

For most Chihuahuas, temperatures below 50°F mean they need extra protection outdoors:

✅ A well-fitting sweater or coat (covers chest and belly, doesn't restrict movement)
✅ Consider booties if walking on salted sidewalks or cold pavement
✅ Limit outdoor time in temperatures below 40°F
✅ Rinse paws after walks — road salt is irritating and toxic if licked
✅ Keep a warm, dry towel near the door for when they come in
✅ Make sure indoor sleeping spots are away from drafts

If your Chi starts shivering on a walk — that's their signal to go back in. Don't push it.

Keep that little body warm this fall and winter. They're counting on you. 🐾

For a Chihuahua, the difference between healthy and overweight can be as little as half a pound — and that matters a lot. 🐾

A 5 lb Chi who gains 1 lb is effectively 20% overweight. That puts serious stress on:
🦴 Joints — especially patellas (already a Chi vulnerability)
❤️ Heart — extra weight accelerates heart disease in small dogs
🩸 Blood sugar — increases diabetes risk

Signs your Chi may be overweight:
→ Can't feel ribs easily when pressing lightly
→ No visible waist from above
→ Belly hangs rather than tucks when viewed from the side
→ Gets winded quickly on short walks

What helps:
✅ Weigh your Chi monthly — a kitchen food scale works for tiny dogs
✅ Measure food portions; don't eyeball it
✅ Use very small treat pieces (a blueberry, a tiny bit of chicken)
✅ Ask your vet for a target weight

A lean Chi is a long-lived Chi. 🐾
