Some stories remind us just how important it is to keep searching for answers and how complex medicine can be.
Meet Missy, a gentle Great Dane with a heart as big as she is. ❤️
Missy first came to us because of a cough. During her exam, a heart murmur was discovered, and she was started on appropriate heart medication. Unfortunately, over the weekend, she continued to decline. Understandably, her family feared the medication was making her worse.
But sometimes, what looks like the obvious answer isn't the real one.
Missy was hospitalized, where our team worked tirelessly to uncover what was happening. Despite intensive monitoring and extensive diagnostics, her condition continued to worsen. As time became critical, the doctors at LAMC faced one of the hardest decisions veterinarians make: choosing a treatment before all the answers were available. The medication selected carried significant risks if the diagnosis was wrong—but if it was right, it could save Missy's life.
It was a leap made with careful medical judgment, experience, and one goal in mind: giving Missy the best possible chance.
When the specialized send-out test results finally returned, they confirmed what had been hiding in plain sight—Missy had Addison's disease.
Often called "The Great Pretender," Addison's disease can mimic countless other illnesses, making it one of the most challenging conditions to diagnose. Its symptoms can be vague, inconsistent, and deceptive, which is why it has earned that nickname. Without treatment, it can become life-threatening. With the right treatment, however, many dogs go on to live happy, healthy lives.
Today, we're celebrating Missy, her incredible family for trusting the process through an incredibly difficult time, and Dr. Bessert for refusing to stop searching for the answer when every minute mattered.
Cases like Missy's are a powerful reminder that medicine isn't always straightforward. Sometimes the greatest victories come from perseverance, teamwork, and having the courage to act when the stakes are highest.
We're so grateful Missy's story has a happy chapter ahead. ❤️
