Cat Care Society

Cat Care Society Our mission is to be a safe and enriching place for all cats on their journey to a loving home. Located in Lakewood, CO
(256)

Cat Care Society is a non-profit, limited-admission cat shelter founded in 1981 to improve the quality of life for cats in need in the Denver metro area. Our unique and free-roaming approach views all cats as worthy, regardless of their age or abilities. We are non-discriminatory in our love for cats and take in cats that may not have a chance anywhere else. This includes cats that have tested pos

itive for FIV or FeLV, or have been diagnosed with chronic health conditions such as diabetes or kidney disease. We pride ourselves in finding these cats loving homes and educating cat owners on the care requirements for cats with special needs. We provide a temporary refuge for cats in need until an appropriate home can be found for each. Veterinary care, premium diet, and human interaction are lovingly provided by dedicated staff and volunteers. Approximately 800 cats come into our care each year! As we receive no government funding, Cat Care Society is supported by a number of loyal volunteers, donors, and partners, without whom we could not operate. Our staff and board of directors work together to ensure that every cat receives an enriching environment and the opportunity to find a home where they can flourish.

Cats are so much more than cute companions; they can be emotional lifelines, especially during challenging periods of life. In times of upheaval, a cat’s presence can offer stability, purpose, and unconditional love that many people rely on to stay resilient.

Unfortunately, many people feel they have no choice but to give up their cats during difficult periods in their lives. For cats, surrender means more than losing their home, it also means losing the family and routine that helps them feel secure. This sudden disruption can be deeply traumatic, often causing emotional and physical stress for the cat while leaving the owner with grief, guilt, and heartbreak. It’s a painful outcome for both.

(Note: We understand that there are times when surrendering a cat is the best option. When that happens, we warmly accept those cats without judgment and provide them with veterinary care, a premium diet, enrichment, and loving human interaction.)

Because challenges in life are so common—and often temporary—Cat Care Society provides community support and proactive programs that address the root causes of surrender.

We have an from Jackie who adopted Fury in May 2026! According to Jackie, Fury’s name matches his energy so they will not be changing it. Jackie is a volunteer at CCS and after reading "Fury" by Salman Rushdie to all the cats for several weeks, Jackie went into the "Gold" room full of quiet and shy cats. Fury the Cat (recently released from quarantine) was all over the book and climbing in Jackie’s flannel shirt. It was love at first pat.

“Fury is settling in well. I've got cat scratchers strategically placed around the couch. He's curious about all the corners he can hide in, but most of all loves to curl up by my side whether I'm at my desk, lounging on the couch, or eating at the kitchen table (he sits on the chair next to me).

“Fury is eating regularly and drinking water, and he quickly figured out where the litter box is and uses it without issue. He loves wand toys, and walking along the back of the couch. Fury is like a shadow and follows me all around from room to room. Our dust buster is his biggest nemesis so far, and even that he's more curious about than scared of. He's definitely adventurous, seeking out every new sound and smell. He likes to be up high, and dislikes taking his medicine (oral syringe antibiotic and eyedrops). We are making it work, though!

“Fury and I researched The Furies in Greco-Roman mythology last night. These are mythical creatures born from the blood of Uranus after his son Kronos slew him. The Furies were entities that persecuted those guilty of the most heinous crimes (patricide chief among them, as a result of their origin story). Essentially, these goddesses were representative of respect to elders and the maintenance of social order. Some stories posit that after Agamemnon pleaded to Athena for relief from his torment at the hands of The Furies that the snake-haired goddesses became more merciful and compassionate in their treatment of humans.”

Have you adopted from CCS in the past? We'd love to hear how it's going! Find other stories and the form here→ https://catcaresociety.org/adoptions/success-stories/

As our Kitten Season Campaign comes to a close, we want to extend our deepest thanks to everyone who donated, sent supplies, shared our posts, and supported this effort throughout the month.

Because of your generosity, vulnerable kittens will receive the medical care, nutrition, and support they need during one of the busiest and most demanding times of the year.

Every donation, registry purchase, and act of support made a direct impact on the lives of kittens in our care and helped ensure we were prepared to say “yes” when they needed us most.

Thank you for standing with us this kitten season. ❤️
