Tradewinds Farm

Tradewinds Farm Promoting and breeding quality Percheron horses as well as a few well broke riding horses suitable f Operated by Tyrel and Amy Frey.

We are a small family farm raising and promoting our homebred Percheron horses at the National and World Levels. We attempt to stay away from the pedigrees more commonly found at sales and show barns around the country, hoping to produce quality outcross horses who are capable of showing and winning at any level and produce the next generation. We must be doing okay, our horses are competing in mu

ltiple disciplines and excelling! We are very proud of what we have accomplished and hope to continue to produce attractive, well conformed, well mannered Percheron horses that anyone would be proud to own. We're always happy to show off the residents here at the farm, please feel free to give us a call and set up a visit

We spent a few extra moments this afternoon grooming and working with the yearlings in preparation for show season. Pictured is 2025 mare Tradewinds Jorjette (Tradewinds Flint x Black Prairie W Views Jet, by ERs Jet). Jojo is a lot like her 3/4 sister, Jubilee; she believes that she is meant to be spoiled and isn't too sure about this work schedule. But the extra attention has met with her approval.

The 2025 Flint foals were incredibly interested in the goings-on in the field next door while we were out plowing. The c**t in the right of this photo is out of the center lead mare who is positioned next to Flint in the work photos from yesterday.

Some of our followers may remember our homebred boy Tradewinds Flint from his weeks back at the farm this winter. We recieved a tip today that he would be out in the field alongside his ladies doing a little work getting ground ready to plant.

He is the right-hand lead horse in these photos.

It's always impressive to watch our homebreds out doing whatever work their owners ask of them. But its extra impressive to watch a mature stallion work alongside the mares he will eventually cover this spring without any fuss or complaint, just dig in and get to work.

We were very thankful for the chance to get to the field and get a chance to grab some photos of him!

Evening turnout is the favorite part of all their days- especially now that they all get to go out on grass!

Jewel and Winter (the mares in the nearest field) spend the majority of the daylight hours in the barn. Why? To keep the worst of the sunbleaching and bug bites to a minimum during show season. In late afternoon, they get turned out into the pasture to graze and stretch their legs until the next morning.

Without fail, the first thing Jewel does is gallop down to the fence separating them from the other mares and gaze longingly at the grass on the other side of the fence. She eventually gives up that dream and will deign to eat what is in the field she's standing in - after, of course, the obligatory foot stomping and yelling at all the other mares to come back and graze with her. Thankfully, all of them are acquainted with the demanding nature of the grey beast and will ignore the worst of her antics. Except Heather. Heather will look up wander slightly closer to her, make direct eye contact and then turn away to graze in the opposite direction. She's petty like that.

Tradewinds Wintersweet (Lucasia Zodiac x RyanDay Flash's Willow) is very intent on saying hello to the neighbors in every field each night. She spends quite a few minutes reaching across fence lines and greeting everyone before she's ready to settle into the business of grazing with her pasture-mate Jewel.

There was a suspicious peeping in the North barn during chores today! These little babies made their entrance into the world and got a little bit confused about their mom.... thankfully we got them sorted fairly quickly and back with their mother. Now to keep them out of feed tubs and hay piles until they get a bit bigger.

The weather finally cooperated and the yearly manure pile cleanup has begun!

The horses did their part by assisting in the piles creation. Now it's their humans turn to get it on the field so a new hay field can be planted - although it appears that one of us was a bit more serious about it than the other.... who spent time between loading playing around.

Poor Scout!

It doesn't appear if today will be the day he has a new friend, either. The humans aren't convinced that Coco isn't using her cuteness against her first-time momma. We have caught her snuggling up to Scout for some mutual grooming twice now. But if Emmy is near? Forget it.

Scout is tenacious though, and patient. So we remain confident he will have a mini shadow sometime soon.

I think we should work harder to make them friendly 🤔

This is our little filly from a few days ago. After consulting with the committee, it was decided to give our niece Ava the deciding vote on a name for this sweet little girl. Meet Tradewinds Dakota (LD's Nova Corbin x Tradewinds Dilemma, by Pine Row AllStarr)! We will likely call her Coco at home, just to keep our syllables to a minimum.

She and her momma have enjoyed the chance to run and play in the front field. And while she isn't interacting with Scout yet, we have every faith that Scout will prevail sometime soon and we'll have baby races to keep us entertained.

More often than not these last two weeks, we've taken a few moments during evening chores to give the "Big boys" a chance to hand graze.

Why? Well, mostly because their paddocks are small enough that green growth is minimal- especially in the spring when they are patrolling for invaders in their kingdoms and their humans feel bad that they watch all the ladies on fresh pastures all day. But the other reason? Because in the springtime, most of their time is spent with their hormones ruling their minds. But for those quiet ten minutes each evening, they are content to munch on the fresh grass and assist with cleaning up around the trees and plantings - and their humans can stand with them and unwind from the busy days that spring always brings us.

And then in ten minutes or so, we rejoin the hustle and bustle in the barnyard - and are distracted by all the pretty girls who rule the roost around here this time of year.
