Happy First Day of Summer! Remember, a scoop of electrolytes and free access to fresh water every day keeps the equine vet away!

Best way to give electrolytes is by providing a salt block or, if your horse won’t use it, giving electrolytes in their feed. Horses are heat stressed any time it is above 85°. On hot days electrolytes are especially important.

Keep an eye out for signs of overheat or colic, which can include an elevated temperature (above 101.5 F), a decrease in manure production, water or food consumption and call our office with any questions, concerns, or in case of an emergency (619) 922-7568

Fireworks can be scary for horses. If your horse has a history of reacting to fireworks you can try the following:
🐴 Keep the horse in a stall that they cannot jump out of.
🐴 Work the horse in a way that it is accustomed to a few hours before the fireworks. This can help to decrease reactivity due to excess energy.
🐴 Give the horse electrolytes a few hours prior to the fireworks. This can help to increase hydration and decrease colic risk.
🐴 Earplugs for horses can help if your horse is sensitive to the sounds that fireworks make.
🐴 Some people have had success leaving a radio playing during the firework display.
🐴 Especially sensitive horses or horses with a history of bad reactions to fireworks may benefit from anti-anxiety or sedation medications. These can be prescribed by a veterinarian in appropriate circumstances.

It's MYTHBUSTER time! 🔎

The core vaccinations for every horse, regardless of their travel status, include Rabies, Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), Western Equine Encephalitis (WEE), West Nile Virus (WNV), and Tetanus.

Unfortunately, mosquitoes, bacteria, and rabid animals do not discriminate when it comes to infecting horses. Whether a horse is in a freshly bedded stall, wide open pasture, or on show grounds, mosquitoes can potentially infect your horse with life threatening diseases such as EEE, WEE, and/or WNV.

Tetanus is a common clostridial bacteria present in the dirt and can infect a horse who has never left its home just the same as a horse who shows every weekend if it doesn't have proper vaccine status.

Rabies is a 100% fatal disease once clinical signs are present and is easily transmissible to humans and other animals both at home and on the trails.

It's also important to note that different regions in the U.S. may have additional "core" recommendations so be sure to ask your veterinarian what is best for your horse!

It has truly been an honor and a privilege to be able to work with a group of veterinarians that truly care about making end of life care as peaceful as possible for both the owner and pet.

Meet Dr. Jessica Stokes ✨

As part of our ongoing series highlighting the incredible veterinarians who make up our team, we’re honored to introduce Dr. Jessica!

Dr. Jessica was born and raised in San Diego. She attended UC Davis, where she earned both her undergraduate and graduate degrees in immunology, before going on to Oklahoma State University for her veterinary degree. With a deep understanding of both science and compassion, she brings a thoughtful, grounded approach to every family she serves.

She believes deeply that in-home euthanasia is one of the most meaningful gifts we can give our pets—when their tomorrows no longer look better than their todays. Dr. Jessica is passionate about helping families say goodbye with peace, dignity, and love in the comfort of home.

Outside of work, she shares her home with four dogs, four cats, four horses, and more chickens than she can count. When she’s not caring for animals, she enjoys spending time with her kids and all of her beloved animals.
