With Thanksgiving approaching, the desire to sneak our pets a piece of the delicious dinner is also approaching. Common Thanksgiving meals often contain ingredients that are dangerous and/or toxic for our pets.

Turkey - Avoid feeding turkey, especially the fatty dark meat AND the skin! A very small amount of unseasoned white meat can be okay. NEVER give any of the leftover bones - these are choking hazards and can also splinter inside of your pets digestive track.

Garlic, onions, leeks and chives - These are common seasonings in Thanksgiving dishes and they are toxic to our cats and dogs - they can cause destruction of red blood cells. Avoid giving any dish cooked with these ingredients such as mashed potatoes, green beans, gravy or stuffing.

Rolls - When rolls have not been cooked yet, the yeast in the rolls can be extremely dangerous because the yeast will begin to rise and expand once ingested and this can lead to obstructions. Aside from obstructions, the natural fermentation process of yeast can also cause alcohol poisoning in our pets stomachs.

Desserts - Thanksgiving desserts such as chocolate dishes, pies and fruitcakes should be kept away from our pets. Most people are aware that chocolate is toxic to pets, but many people are not aware the raisins, currants and xylitol (a commonly used sugar substitute) are also toxic to our pets.

While we want to avoid feeding our pets these yummy foods, we also need to make sure that our pets do not rummage through the trash cans to partake in the Thanksgiving dinner. Make sure that any food waste is thrown away in garbage cans with lids or garbage cans that the pets can not access.

Lets make sure our pets stay safe this holiday season!

Sweet 8-month-old Copper had quite the tumble off the couch and came to see us after breaking his radius and ulna (the bones in his forearm). Our team was able to splint his leg, manage his pain, and get him feeling a bit more comfortable while his family coordinated follow-up care with an orthopedic surgeon.

We’re happy to report that Copper is adjusting wonderfully to his splint and is scheduled for surgery this Wednesday! Please join us in sending this brave little pup all the good vibes for a smooth surgery and speedy recovery! πŸ’•
