Today we welcomed two tiny Mourning Geckos into rescue!
Mourning geckos are one of the most fascinating reptiles that we’ve had the opportunity to help within rescue. These small, tropical geckos are almost entirely female (males are very rare) and reproduce through a process called parthenogenesis, meaning they can lay fertile eggs without a male. In other words, one gecko can become many geckos!😳 (and as a rescue, we have to be very on top of that, to prevent more animals being bred into the ‘trade’!)
Native to tropical regions, they thrive in warm, humid environments filled with plants, branches, and plenty of climbing opportunities. They’re active, very fast, curious, and BOLD for such tiny reptiles.
These two arrived in plastic bottles/cups being used for transport. While there was ventilation, they’re undoubtedly much happier now that they’re safely settled into an enclosure here at WEAR. Over the coming days we’ll be monitoring them, allowing them time to decompress, and making sure they have everything they need, before going up for adoption.
This surrender also serves as an important reminder that not everyone who needs to surrender an animal is in a position to provide a surrender donation. This individual couldn’t provide a monetary donation, which is absolutely totally fine. While those donations help offset the cost of food, supplies, housing, and veterinary care, we never want finances to be the reason an animal doesn’t receive help.
Because of that, we’re considering dedicating this week’s $5 Friday fundraiser to helping cover the costs of caring for animals that arrive without surrender donations.
