Teaching Tuesday!

The biography of grain-free food and the pet food industry is entertaining if nothing else. It starts in the early 2000s when high-protein, gluten-free eating lifestyles like Atkins became popular in the United States. Like many things, we tend to anthropomorphize, or translate what makes sense for humans into something that also makes sense for our pets. The vision of wolves and tigers as direct relatives to Fido and Fluffy only supported this theory. The melamine scandal in 2007, when thousands of pets got sick or died after Chinese wheat was contaminated with the toxin melamine, only added to the fear of feeding grains to pets. The perfect stage was set in the mid-2010s for pet food makers to create a whole new market. Boutique brands appealing to a pet owner's heart were born.

Grains were replaced with legumes like peas, lentils, and chickpeas. Then in 2018, the FDA announced an investigation into a link between grain-free diets and DCM, dilated cardiomyopathy, a heart condition where the muscle weakens and can be fatal. Over 90% of implicated foods were grain-free. 93% contained peas or lentils.

The association is real. Grain-free diets are not medically necessary for most pets. The risk is not worth it for zero benefit.

Our team is happy to talk through your pet's current food at any wellness visit.

Hot summer days. Tall stalks baking in the sun. Barbecues, butter, tortilla chips. Most of us carry warm associations with it. Somewhere along the way, though, corn's reputation in the pet food aisle shifted. Today many pet owners see it as a red flag on an ingredient list. A filler. A sign of low-quality food.

That reputation came from a marketing movement, not science. In the 1990s and 2000s, the phrase "cheap filler" attached itself to corn and spread quickly. It was not fact. Properly processed corn supplies protein, complex carbohydrates, dietary fiber, essential amino acids, and multiple vitamins. Corn used in pet food is ground and cooked, making it approximately 95% digestible.

Corn also accounts for less than 5% of diagnosed food allergies in pets. Beef, dairy, and chicken are far more common culprits.

We recommend evaluating food based on evidence, not marketing. Our team is happy to help.

Team Thursday

Meet Amanda, aka Energizer Bunny. I cannot even explain in words how resourceful this mom, wife, and teammate is...she is seemingly able to make time out of nothing. Whether it be taking her boys to multiple playgrounds, rehoming groundhogs, or creating masterpieces (including our personalized bandanas for surgery patients) with her Cricut, Amanda embraces life and all that comes with it with a passion that is contagious. It has been a true gift working with her the last five years and I am looking forward to many more to come. Being a part of her world and family is a true blessing.

Teaching Tuesday!

Nutrition is one of the most debated topics in human medicine. The food pyramid has changed more than once. Scientists still disagree on fat, carbs, and protein. Animal nutrition is no different.

Here is what that means for your pet.

Anyone can call themselves a pet nutrition expert. The NAVC Pet Nutrition Coach certification requires just eight hours of online learning. These credentials can lead well-meaning pet owners toward foods that are not the right fit.

The bar for genuine expertise is much higher. A board-certified veterinary nutritionist is a veterinarian who completes four additional years of specialized training in animal nutrition. That is roughly twelve years of education total. A PhD in animal nutrition represents about ten years of dedicated study.

We recommend looking for brands with one of these professionals on staff. Our team can point you toward brands that meet that standard.

Teaching Tuesday!

Who is making your pet's food? It is perhaps the most important question you can ask. Creating an ad with an energetic Labrador costs far less than conducting actual research. Marketing speaks to your emotions. It tells you very little about what is in the bag.

Start by calling the number on the bag. Ask a few questions and see how they respond. Companies like Hills, Royal Canin, and Purina employ veterinary nutritionists you can reach directly. Many brands cannot say the same.

Most pet food brands do not own the facility where their food is made. They provide a recipe and a label. They do not control ingredient sourcing, production standards, or safety testing. We recommend choosing a brand that can answer your questions and stands behind its process.

Our team is happy to share which brands we trust and why.
