🦮Indoor Leash Work With Trainer Corey🐕‍🦺

Watch as trainer Corey demonstrates some indoor leash work with some canine siblings and read below to understand what he’s doing and why he’s doing it!

❓What is indoor leash work?❓
Indoor leash work is keeping a light leash, tab, or drag line attached to your dog inside the house to guide their behavior, prevent bad habits, and practice basic obedience without needing to grab or chase them.

❓How does it work? ❓
Through a combination of tethering the lead to you, using it as a drag line that can be picked up or stepped on when you need to intervene, and/or actively managing your dog with a physical connection, you can both interrupt unwanted actions before they become habits and speed up the learning process for training.

❓What are some key benefits of indoor leash work?❓
⭐️Prevents Bad Habits: Stops counter surfing, chewing, stealing items, and door bolting before they happen.
⭐️Aids Potty Training: Allows you to quickly and smoothly guide a puppy outside the moment they start sniffing or circling.
⭐️Clear Communication: Bridges the gap between verbal cues and physical action, helping your dog learn what you want faster.
⭐️Builds Loose-Leash Skills: Gets the dog accustomed to gentle pressure and guidance indoors, lowering outdoor distractions during early practice.

As you can see Corey demonstrate, he can use the leash to gently lead the dogs into the action he has commanded when they need the help, marking the success with positive affirmations, and, when they’re doing as they’re told, the leash remains loose, no guidance necessary!

How to Teach Your Dog to Clean Up

We’re all about a fun and practical trick over here. And what’s more practical than cleaning up after yourself? To teach your dog to put their toys away, follow these four simples steps.

Step 1️⃣: Teach the Basics
Ensure your dog already knows basic cues like “take it” and “drop it”. Practice handing the toy directly to your dog, letting them hold it for a second, and asking them to “drop it”. Reward them generously with treats and praise every time they release the toy on command.

Step 2️⃣: Introduce the Basket
After your dog has mastered taking and dropping their toy, sit on the floor with a basket right in front of you. Give your dog the toy or encourage them to pick one up nearby. Lure or guide your dog so their head is hovering right over the basket when you give the “drop it” command. Give a massive “jackpot” reward (several treats in a row) the very first times the toy drops inside the basket.

Step 3️⃣: Add a Verbal Cue
Once your dog reliably drops the toy into the basket while it is close, introduce a cleanup command like “tidy up”, “clean up”, or “put it away.” Say your chosen cue right before your dog drops the toy into the box. Continue to mark and reward every successful drop inside the container.

Step 4️⃣: Add Distance and Practice
Slowly move the basket a few feet away from you during practice sessions. Toss the toy a short distance, let your dog retrieve it, and guide them back to drop it into the newly positioned basket. Gradually increase the distance over multiple training sessions until your dog walks across the room to place the toy in the bin on cue. To make it even harder, disperse multiple toys around the room and give the clean up command. Eventually, throwing the toys again to be “cleaned up” becomes part of the reward!

10 Ways to Stimulate Your Dog When the Weather Takes a Turn for the Worse

1. Teach a new trick: Teach simple new commands or fun tricks like “spin,” “shake,” “roll over,” or “sit pretty” for ten minutes a day. Teaching a dog a new trick stimulates them by engaging their brain in active problem-solving, which burns mental energy and satisfies their natural urge to work. Figuring out what action earns a reward requires intense concentration and impulse control for your dog and then, earning the reward - like treats or praise - releases dopamine!

2. Delayed fetch: Having your dog place for an elongated duration as you throw the ball or toy and then having to wait to be released to go fetch helps them practice impulse control. And this impulse control work helps stimulate your dog as it forces their brain to switch from automatic, instinctual reactions to active, cognitive processing.

3. Hide and seek: Whether you hide a treat or a toy in another room or under another object and have your dog go find it, the act of engaging your dog’s primal hunting instincts and forcing active problem-solving provides a powerful mental workout. Plus, sniffing requires immense brainpower. Tracking a scent through the house forces your dog to process complex sensory information rather than just reacting physically.

4. Work for treats: Using a classic Kong toy stuffed with treats or a treat dispensing Bob-a-lot or something similar where your dog has to work for his or her treats gives them a sense of purpose as it’s a physical task to complete. The licking and slow feeding aspects also help your dog by releasing calming chemicals in their brain and burning off nervous energy.

5. Puzzle toys: Using a puzzle toy like a snuffle mat engages your dog’s brain as he or she first requires mental focus to figure out how to tilt, roll, or lick the toy and then once they’ve figured it out, it helps them build confidence and teaches your dog how to learn new skills.

6. Chew toys: 15 to 20 minutes of enrichment focused chews (high quality stinky chews) is more stimulating to dogs than hours of flavorless rawhides and nonedible chews. Plus, you’re working on place or crate duration at the
