My puppy is 10–11 weeks old, and at this stage I like to separate what feels URGENT from what is IMMEDIATE.

URGENT — things I don’t want to miss during this developmental window:
• Thoughtful exposure and socialization
• Building confidence through new experiences
• Creating positive associations with people, environments, sounds and handling

IMMEDIATE — the everyday skills we’re building right now:
• Communication and marker understanding
• Engagement, play and relationship
• Structure, boundaries and learning how to settle

Not everything needs to be perfected right now. I’m looking at what matters developmentally, what can be built over time, and what deserves my attention today.

Play is a skill — and it can be taught.

In this video, I’m working with a 10–11 week old puppy on learning how to target, engage with, and play with a tug attached to a ball.

At this age, puppies have a lot of energy, curiosity, and natural drive, but they don’t always know where to put it. Intentional play gives them an appropriate outlet while also building engagement and connection with their handler.

We’re working on:
• Targeting the toy
• Building interest and confidence in tug
• Encouraging appropriate biting and gripping on the toy
• Creating interactive play with the handler
• Giving puppy energy an appropriate outlet
• Helping the puppy transition from activity into rest afterward

The goal isn’t simply to “wear the puppy out.” It’s to teach them how to engage, use their body and brain, and then settle when the activity is over.

These early puppy experiences are part of building the communication, confidence, and relationship that future training will sit on.

The imprinting happening right before my eyes is exactly why I wanted this puppy to come into my life while my older dog is still here to help shape him.

Watching him observe, follow, and learn from a dog who has exceeded every expectation I’ve ever had is something special. So much of what makes a great dog isn’t formally taught—it’s absorbed through experience, relationship, and example.

This is exactly what I hoped for. 🤎🐾

What happens when you put some of the best minds in the dog training industry in one place? 🐾

I came home from the IACP Conference with new perspectives, new knowledge, and an even bigger appreciation for how much there is to learn in this industry.

I’m no stranger to making mistakes—Growth comes from staying curious, asking better questions, and continuing to learn so I can show up better for the dogs and people I serve.
