The 41st Annual Bushnell Fall Festival kicks off tomorrow at 10 a.m. in downtown Bushnell, and Sumter County Animal Services is excited to join in on the fun! 🎉

Increased mosquito activity has been reported throughout Sumter County, with presumptive positive results this week indicating potential transmission of viruses that may affect both people and animals. Because adverse weather conditions can hinder mosquito-control spraying efforts, residents are encouraged to take steps to reduce their risk and help protect the community.

✅ DRAIN: Eliminate standing water around your home. Check buckets, flowerpots, tires, birdbaths, gutters and anything that collects rainwater.
✅ COVER: Wear long sleeves and pants when possible and use an EPA-registered insect repellent.
✅ PROTECT: Keep window and door screens in good condition to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home.
✅ REPORT: Experiencing excessive mosquito activity in your neighborhood? Let us know! Citizen reports help Sumter County Mosquito Control identify problem areas, monitor mosquito populations, and determine where treatment may be needed.

Thank you to everyone who visited us this past weekend at Webster Pet Day and Rural King! Our animals and staff had a blast meeting and interacting with all the new people. As a result of the community outreach, two kittens officially found their furever homes! While we’re so thankful for those who stepped up to help our precious felines, many animals are still available for adoption. Nico is one of them! This sweet boy attended Webster Pet Day, eager to find his people. Many stopped to greet him, but he didn’t get the happy ending he longed for. Nothing beats the love of a dog. The happy tail wags when you walk through the door, the companionship on quiet days, and the unconditional love that turns a house into a home - those are the moments that make having a dog so special. Every shelter animal is waiting for something special: a home, a family, and a place where they finally feel like they belong.

For Queen and one of her puppies, that journey took a beautiful step forward this week as they entered foster care with a loving family. For this family, fostering means adopting. Once the puppy is old enough and has completed the required spay or neuter procedure, the adoption can be finalized, and the puppy will officially become part of the family.

But fostering can look different for everyone. It may mean opening your home for a weekend, a week, or longer, giving a shelter animal a break and the chance to relax, settle in, and show who they really are outside of the shelter. Time in a home can also help us learn things we may not see in a kennel, such as whether they enjoy cuddling on the couch, playing with kids, getting along with other pets, or simply having a quiet place to feel safe.

Sometimes, fostering turns into forever. No matter how long you can open your home, you are giving an animal something incredibly valuable: time outside the shelter, individual attention and the opportunity to experience life as part of a family. You do not have to be ready to adopt to make a difference. Maybe you can give a weekend, a week, or even discover that the animal sleeping on your couch was meant to stay there.

Give fostering a try. You may change an animal’s life — and they just might change yours too.

Sumter County Animal Services has a busy month planned for October! In between coordinating shelter operations, our team will be getting active in the community to raise awareness about how you can make a meaningful difference in our animals’ lives. Our outreach events serve as an opportunity for the public to meet our team, ask questions, and learn about our free foster and adoption programs. At certain events, you might even get the chance to adopt an animal on the spot. Stop by one of the events below to learn more about the programs we offer. We want to extend a BIG thank you to our community partners for hosting us regularly; we couldn’t make an impact without you!

Sometimes the best memories in life are made with a furry friend by your side! Nina is eagerly waiting to make her days count with you. This 7-year-old mixed breed has a loving personality that will make a great fit for almost any type of home. She gets along wonderfully with cats, dogs, and children of all ages! Nina is the perfect companion if you like taking walks around the park, cuddling on the couch, or relaxing on your patio. She is always up for anything, as long as it involves her favorite people. Currently in a foster home, Nina is housetrained and well mannered.
